Subject: Public Records Request regarding “no signs of any kind”

Good afternoon,

We received word that UCF may be violating the First Amendment rights of its students by declaring that (i) there “shall be no signs of any kind” and (ii) that students “need” to be corralled into a free speech zone set up “in front of OFSL” in Greek Park. We understand UCF has threatened its students with police action “if necessary.”

Pursuant to chapter 119, F.S., we request a copy of any email sent by UCF or anyone acting on UCF’s behalf pertaining in any way to the conduct by which UCF fraternity members should governed during sorority bid day, including, but not limited to, an email containing any of the quoted words or phrases above.

We also are writing to seek assurances that UCF will not impose any of these restrictions on its students conducting First Amendment protected speech (news gathering) during the event.

If we misunderstand the situation at all, please clarify it for us. We are working on a story about this and also welcome UCF’s side of the story, in addition to the records and assurances which we seek.

Sincerely,

Jake Rakoci
