Special Prosecutor Angela Corey released large portions of the evidence she used to charge George Zimmerman with the second-degree murder of Trayvon Martin — and it has legal experts amping up criticism of her case.

Famed criminal defense attorney Alan Dershowitz appeared on Fox News Friday afternoon slamming Corey for charging Zimmerman, based on this evidence.

“Right from the beginning the prosecution knew Zimmerman had bruises on the back of his head,” Dershowitz told Megyn Kelly. “They just submitted false affidavits and generated the media frenzy. The finger of responsibility points clearly at the prosecutor. She raised expectations by indicting Zimmerman for second-degree murder when there was clearly never any basis.”

Dershowitz reacts to evidence released on May 17

Corey clearly disagrees, as she believes the evidence shows Zimmerman profiled Martin and committed second-degree murder.

“She has a terrible reputation in Florida for always overcharging,” Dershowtiz said of Corey on Fox News. Recently, Corey has come under fire from Congresswoman Corrine Brown, in an unrelated case, for her courtroom victory in getting Melissa Alexander sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing a “warning shot” at her allegedly abusive husband.

Wealthy Polo mogul John Goodman, who was recently convicted by a jury of killing recent UCF grad Scott Wilson in a DUI crash, received his sentence Friday.

A Palm Beach County Circuit Judge sentenced Goodman to 16 years in prison, fined him $10,000 and took away his driver’s license.

Goodman in court during sentencing; awaits appeal

KnightNews.com has been following the case that has outraged UCF students since Wilson’s death in 2010, but the case drew much more national attention when Goodman adopted his girlfriend in a controversial estate planning move.

During the sentencing, the judge admitted that an appeals court will review the case and decide whether he handled the case appropriately.

Goodman’s attorney, Roy Black, believes his client didn’t get a fair shake.

“It is our belief that multiple errors were committed during and before the trial that, in effect, denied our client’s ability to get a fair trial,” Black said in a statement to KnightNews.com following the verdict.

“We intend to file an appeal so that our client can receive the just and fair proceeding to which he is entitled by law.”

Goodman was convicted after prosecutors alleged he was drunk at the time he left Wilson to die in a canal after his Bentley hit Wilson’s Hyundai in South Florida.

KnightNews.com will continue following the appeal process and update you if Goodman’s sentence changes.

Reports say that George Zimmerman, 28, will be charged for the killing of 17-year old Trayvon Martin.

The Washington Post reports that Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey will announce the prosecution as early as Wednesday afternoon although it is not clear on whatexactly George Zimmerman will be charged for.

The prolonged arrest of Zimmerman has caused a social uproar around the nation, with African-American Civil Rights leaders like Rev.Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to make trips to Sanford to advocate for Zimmerman’s arrest.

Groups like the New Black Panthers have placed a 10,000 dollar bounty for Zimmerman, and his lawyers have said that Zimmerman has been receiving death threats.

One of the most popular UCF area bars was featured on NBC Nightly News Friday, in a story about George Zimmerman, the man who says he shot and killed an unarmed Trayvon Martin, 17, in self defense.

The NBC story reported Zimmerman was arrested at Knight Library during an undercover sting operation UCF police were participating in to catch underage drinkers. Zimmerman was arrested for assault on a law enforcement officer, but the charges were later dropped.

According to documents obtained by media, Zimmerman wrote in an application to the Seminole County Law Enforcement Academy that he didn’t know the person he assaulted was an officer — and that the officer assaulted him first. NBC reported the officer did identify himself as an officer and showed his badge, however.

Zimmerman then seemed to try and add credibility to his story by throwing UCFPD under the bus in his application, claiming a member of the same undercover UCFPD unit was shot and killed by an Orlando police officer, because OPD couldn’t even tell the UCF officer was an officer when the UCF officer discharged his weapon during a 2005 tailgate party.

Thousands overran Sanford Thursday evening during the rally for the arrest of the killer of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Martin died on February 26, 2012 when a self-appointed head of the Neighborhood Watch, George Zimmerman, shot him. There is much controversy surrounding the incident, and it has since gained international attention.

A Trayvon Martin supporter holds up a rose on March 22, 2012 at the rally held in Sanford, FL, the shooting site of 17 year old Martin, who was killed on February 26, 2012 by George Zimmerman, a Sanford resident. (Tahwanah Reeves/KnightNews.com)

Most of the dissent surroundings what many believe to be the inaction of local law enforcement to arrest Zimmerman in connection with Martin’s death. Zimmerman has admitted to the killing, but claims it was in self-defense and that he was within his rights.

Many doubt the validity of his claims due to the fact that Trayvon was unarmed except for the hoodie he was wearing along with a bag of Skittles and some ice tea.

Many in the rally actually wore hoodies, adorned their signs with Skittles bags, and brought empty tea cans.

Zimmerman’s claims were further brought into public scrutiny when the Mayor of Sanford, bowing to public sentiment, released the 911 tapes of both Zimmerman and Martin from that night.

The crowd had a multitude of slogans that day, but the most recurring was, “No Rest until an Arrest!” That sentiment was shared by local UCF students in attendance.

“I really thought this was a good cause,” says UCF MBA student Dan’elle Bellamy. “It’s not just black people [here]; everybody’s out.”

That was echoed by the mother of the victim, Sybrina Fulton, who said, “This is not just about black and white. It’s about right and wrong.”

Fulton, and Trayvon’s father, Tracy Martin, repeated to the crowd that Trayvon was not just their son, but that he was everyone’s son and that Trayvon Martin was every person in America.

To support that philosophy many in the crowd could be seen with signs and shirts that read, “I am Trayvon Martin.”

“I really liked it. It was moving, so many people showed up and nothing got out of control,” said Mallory Minor, a University of Central Florida Junior in International Relations who also attended the rally.

Reverend Al Sharpton comforts Tracy Martin at a rally on March 22, 2012 calling for the arrest of George Zimmerman. (Tahwanah Reeves/KnightNews.com)

Minor tried to organize a group of students to attend the rally as a way to signify UCF’s student support of the Martin family.

Yet, UCF students were not the only defenders of Trayvon Martin.

“You can’t defend yourself against a pack of Skittles and some ice tea…don’t talk to us like we stupid,” declared notable Civil Rights icon, Reverend Al Sharpton.

And he was not alone in his sentiments. Sharpton went on to denote the various high profile individuals who stood on stage with him.

The list went across professions, ages, and experiences, but most fell into the category of noted Civil Rights or civil/social justice leaders, such as Judge Greg Mathis, nationally syndicated talk radio host Michael Baisden, NAACP President Ben Jealous, members of Florida and other state’s Legislature, and even Congresspersons at the Federal level.

“I didn’t come here by myself. Get ready Florida. You thought it was hot. The heat just arrived,” said Sharpton who is determined to see Zimmerman arrested.

Also, Sharpton and the NAACP demand that the law enforcement agency over the case be investigated and those officials directly involved removed for what they believe to be an inability to uphold the standards of the law.
They got part of their wish, as announced part way through the rally.

University of Central Florida (Orlando) MBA student Dan’elle Bellamy wears a white hoodie as one of thousands showing support for Trayvon Martin on March 22, 2012 at the rally held in Sanford, FL. (Tahwanah Reeves/KnightNews.com)

The prosecutor voluntarily removed himself from the case and the Sanford Chief of Police stepped down temporarily, both on the same day as the rally.

But the Empowerment Movement, a national coalition of predominantly black churches, civil/social justice organizations, community leaders and Greek-letter organizations, working to increase civil and social justice in America in the wake of, and specifically in relation to, the Trayvon Martin killing, is not done yet.

There will be a March on Monday, March 26, 2012 from Centennial Park in Sanford, to Sanford’s Civic Center, where the City Commission meeting will be held.

Fulton will speak again on this day and concerned citizens will rally once again for Trayvon Martin.

Though the shooting was a one time occurrence, it will have far reaching effects into the future.

The killing has brought out public unrest in regards to racial discrimination, state gun and self-defense laws, as well as national hate crime standards.

None of these are simple or short term conversations, and none are going away soon as people seem tired of dealing with what they feel to be recurring issues.

As Reverend John T. Long, III, who chaired the event said, “It is a sin, too long black life has been undervalued. It is a sin too long do we sit back in silence and it happens over and over again.”

“It is our belief that multiple errors were committed during and before the trial that, in effect, denied our client’s ability to get a fair trial. We intend to file an appeal so that our client can receive the just and fair proceeding to which he is entitled by law.”
