The eager, yet nervous, duo had their plans set and were ready to begin a brand new year, managing nearly 58,000 students at UCF.

Now, nine months later, we sat down with the pair again to take a look at how things went from start to finish.

Highly awaited performers Panic! At the Disco and Lupe Fiasco sang several of their most well-known songs including Panic!’s “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” and from Lupe’s latest album Lasers, “The Show Goes On.” Between Panic! At the Disco lead singer Brendon Urie’s eccentric performance style and Lupe’s drenching of the front crowd, student response of the show overall seemed positive.

Yes, we’re talking about the growing anticipation inside of every UCF Gym lover…for the new expansion!

If you’ve ever wondered what’s going on behind all of that construction, then you’ll be glad to know that today KnightNews got a sneak peek video tour! SGA President, Mike Kilbride, and some of the developers took us behind the scenes and told us what amazing new features you can expect with the expansion.

We all know that sometimes the more popular group exercise classes fill up fast, so along with the expansion comes more rooms for you to perfect those washboard abs or 20-20-20 till you drop.

Swimmers seem to be the most excited about the gym expansion; it’s because of that new, big, beautiful pool isn’t it? Courses in CPR certification will be offered and a second floor viewing deck/lounge will allow students to hang out and enjoy a pool view.

IM sport games are often the biggest little games you’ll see outside of the stadium or the arena. Now there will be even more opportunities for that healthy competitiveness. The MAC (Multi-purpose Activity Court) will house more IM games with a set of stadium seats overlooking the courts from the second floor. Another area for fans will have high-top stools set in front of large glass viewing windows. So get ready for a bigger audience to cheer you on as you play.

The new gym wants to keep you hydrated! Next to the water fountains you’ll find water-bottle refill stations so you can save yourself a trip to the vending machine and a couple of bucks.

Finally we got to see the big cardio room. UCF students were able to test different equipment brands in the current gym and submit their pick for the expansion’s treadmills and ellipticals. Wanna know the coolest part about the new cardio section? While you pedal, step or run, you’ll be generating electricity that will help power the gym!

With a line wrapped around the Venue (old arena), one could immediately tell it was going to be a packed house, and when push came to shove — literally — not everyone was able to be admitted into general seating because capacity had been reached.

Once he had students engaged, he began to unfold some fresh material, at one point asking the audience which they thought was more likely to result in being pulled over by a cop: having one hundred dildos strapped to the roof of your car, or having one single dildo straped to the roof of your car. He even called out a couple of on-duty police officers in the crowd to ask them if there was anything illegal about dildos on the roof of a car.

Once the majority of his comedy was completed, he went on to mention a recent moment of rage he had with an audience member. He said that a few days ago in Ohio, an audience member compared Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler. In a fit of rage, Black said he angrily went off on the person, and later apologized for it on his blog. It’s not fully clear what the intent of this anectode was, since it was niether particularly funny, nor did it have a specific call to action.

Eventually he returned to making the crowd laugh, ending with a story about his recent trip to the doctor for having blood in his stool. Basically, he went to the doctor who put him through all the embarrassing acts of stool-checking, only to conclude by asking if he had eaten any red foods recently. Once Black confirmed that he had eat beat salad, the doctor said that was the cause of what he thought was blood. Black was furious this question wasn’t asked first, since eating red foods is known to cause the appearance of blood in one’s stool, since it would have avoided an anal examination altogether.

This anecdote was much funnier when Black told it as opposed to reading this recap, but hey, go watch it on YouTube or something, as some student has undoubtedly posted the video from his mediocre camera phone.

All in all, it was a great show at a great price — free. It’s great to see our student dollars put to use by having stellar performances for incoming students to really feel like a part of the UCF community.

Finally, the crowd could take it no longer, and begging screams were heard for Drake to perform. He emerged onstage singing “Forever” and the crowd instantly went wild. Afterwards, he went on with the show singing some of his most popular songs. Just to name a few: “Throw it in the Bag (remix)”, “Uptown”, “Successful”, “I’m Still Fly”, and “Fear” were some of the songs he performed. Drake even brought out Birdman as a surprise guest during two of his songs!

Drake engaged the crowd throughout his entire performance. While speaking of his good friend, Lil’ Wayne, Drake encouraged the audience to sing “I’m Goin’ in” with him; claiming that Orlando was one of the largest crowds on tour and Wayne would be listening to HOT97 from his jail cell to hear us sing the song. And, speaking of “engaging the crowd”, Drake decided to invite one female student up on stage with him to dance. Needless to say, there were thousands of other very unhappy and jealous girls because of this.

Drizzy Drake closed the show quite appropriately with his song “Over”, though no one in the arena wanted to see him leave the stage. It was an unforgettable concert for all UCF students in attendance. Free Wayne!

Na’im Lynn was quite funny, taking advantage of performing in front of a college crowd by presenting jokes a UCF student could relate to at some point during their college career- hygiene (and not showering for days on end due to pileups of stuff to do), roommate issues (especially the ones who disrespect space boundaries and use what’s not theirs before asking), the freedom of college and being away from parents (“overnight” friends), among other topics.

He then went on to talk about texting and how we use it to say things we would never dare say in person. Then he talked about the nicknames he gave himself (“Calculus- because it’s hard”.)

He thanked the crowd for being so courteous and introduced Kevin Hart. He joked that he’d be in the films Coming to America 2 and Bad Boyz Forever, which will not be coming out, ever.

Kevin Hart took the stage by saying The Venue looked like the inside of a jail due to the black curtains adorning the stage and its surrounding areas.

According to Hart, children will do some dumb things, and that was one of the main themes of his set. He spoke about his own childhood and the exploits of his children.

He stated his fear of UFC fighters, and rationalizes his fear by saying that they exist, and actually know how to fight. What he doesn’t fear, however, are thugs, as they talk too much before a fight and end up being knocked out by real pugilists.

His uncle recently got out of jail and Hart used that to joke about what being in jail does to one’s speech, mannerisms and body shape- the obscure slang, the “say it with your chest!” phenomena where the chest is stuck out, and how large, muscle-bound upper bodies with no lower body strength predominates among inmates.

From there, he went on to detail the differences between men and women, specifically how we differ emotionally. The art of “storming out” was discussed, and he said he’s bad at it because he forgets things inside. (“Hey baby, let me in, I forgot my keys!”).

Like Lynn, he used his audience to an advantage by saying that college kids fall in love too quickly (“You got on jeans? I got on jeans! We’re meant to be!”) and differentiated between old and new couples (old couples are angry, new couples make you angry).

He then changed continents and jumped over to Africa, specifically the cheetah, whose top speed is upwards of eighty miles an hour. (“If you drive a Ford Focus or a Honda Civic, you’re dead!”)

Classic comedic gems were referenced in the art of the fall, and nothing is funnier than a falling person: girls don’t fall, but buckle instead. Guys either almost fall and try to cover it up, or fall and get angry with what they tripped over. Old people take too long to fall, and instead, slide to the floor beneath them.

The last set in the show was mainly about the exploits of his good friend Nate, such as how he takes upwards of 25 minutes to pull out of a parking space.

Overall, both performers were exceptionally talented and I, and the crowd, had a grand old time evidenced by the standing ovation and thunderous applause that they received.

I’d say (with my chest!) that a grand time was had by all that was watching.

The four hour set was the largest single-headliner event to take place on the East Coast, drawing club kids and older Orlando residents alike. Show goers started arriving two hours before Tiesto took the stage to get a prime spot and got to hear Danny Daze mix up house and hip hop, which certainly fed the vibe in the arena.

Once the world famous deejay arrived, the crowd went wild. Kaleidoscope was the first song to resonate through the speakers and once the beat dropped after five minutes of crazy anticipation, a spectacular light show pumped the trance fans up to dance all night long.

The set list had two acts, the first including new hits such as “Escape Me“, “Century”, “Feel It In My Bones”, and “Who Wants To Be Alone”- all songs from his new album Kaleidoscope that dropped on October 6, 2009. Toward the end he played older hits like “Adagio for Strings” which caused uproar of listener appreciation.

There were girls on guys’ shoulders getting a solid view of Tiesto and twirling glow sticks galore to energize the crowd to capacity. Behind Tiesto, as well as in front of his booth, were screens as tall as the arena that displayed wicked rainbow images of the deejay himself and black silhouettes of smoking chicks dancing on chairs and singing along to the songs. At the close of his show Tiesto signed his headphones and threw them to a very lucky person, then came down to the floor and shook hands and high fived the crowd.

This show was out of control and surely will be remembered by all who experienced it.

Way more students than expected have come out to see the fresh produce, cooked meals, and art and crafts from local vendors. Some stands even sell out of their product because of the overwhelming number of customers.

The Arena will hold the market every Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be nearly 80 vendors at each Farmers’ Market. Admission and parking are free. The event is attracting everyone from students and teachers, to local residents and families.
