As another round of semester finals come, and go, students continue to look for ways to cram more information in less time. Whether it is help staying awake or help focusing more, college students are always in search of the next best thing.

Adderall has become a popular, and illegal, drug of choice for many college students to help with studying for finals. But a new supplement claims to be a better, legal alternative for students who seek that “upper edge.”

ADDtabz is a new, legal, over-the-counter drug which is aimed at helping keep people focused and energized for activities such as studying for tests. The supplement is said to provide similar benefits that Adderall has such as increased focus and heightened attention, but without any of the negative side effects.

Knightnews.com had a chance to interview ADDTabz representative Dan Rudy on Friday afternoon. We were the first college news source to interview an AddTabz and found out interesting information about the product that is becoming huge on college campuses. See the interview below:

The University of Colorado Boulder has been a reluctant home in past years to the largest gathering of people in the U.S who celebrate the many benefits and uses of marijuana on the infamous day of 4/20.

This 4/20, the University of Colorado Boulder has taken a different approach in the annual Mary Jane holiday. The University plans to shut down campus on Friday according to the Denver Post reports. CU- Boulder wants to no longer hold such types of “festivities” on campus, which has drawn nearly 10,000 people to Norlin Quad to light up 4/20 in recent years and instead providing a free concert by Wyclef Jean at the Coors Events Center.

CU- Boulder Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano made this statement about the reasons for employing such extreme measures to end the gathering via the school’s website:

The gathering disrupts teaching and research right in the heart of the campus. The size of the crowd has become unmanageable, and limits our faculty, staff and students from getting to class, entering buildings and doing their basic work. It needs to end.

In past years the school and local police decided to adopt a more mellow approach in handling the massive crowds during 4/20. They would leave the crowd alone but direct people in an orderly fashion on to the Norlin Quad to keep the public safe.

Courtney Rosenberg, Junior at the University of Colorado Boulder, stated:Last year, I stood in amazement. I just looked at the crowd of over 10,000 people gathered peacefully all together in one medium sized field. There were no fights, no broken bear bottles, no screaming, no anger, no rants or riots. It was just the gathering of people with a positive mindset.

In a letter written to The Denver Post, DiStefano goes further stating that marijuana celebration is far from a protest or demonstration and should not be treated as such. “If it is a protest, then every party on every college campus in America is a protest,” DiStefano writes.

More than 350 University of Colorado students have RSVP’d by Wednesday evening to a Facebook event, titled “ Stay Classy CU”, encouraging students to wear a suit and tie to campus and around Boulder on Friday to protest the 4/20 smokeout. Junior Andrew Trujillo who created the Facebook page states that the group is not meant to stand against legalization or the use of marijuana, but to encourage students no to use the substance in public, which gives employers and others a negative view of CU students.

According to KDVR, CU claims that the 4/20 event costs the university more than $50,000 in cleanup and safety. But, the entire Wyclef concert will cost Cu approximately $150,000, according to The Daily Camera.

Classes will continue as scheduled on April 20 and the campus will remain open to all CU- Boulder students, faculty and staff, but they will need their BuffOne ID cards to get on, and around the campus, a press release from CU- Boulder states. Police will be dispersed around campus and will have checkpoints set up at all major campus entry points. Anyone who is not a student, staff or faculty member will not be permitted on campus, and individuals found on campus without a BuffOne ID will be subject to a ticket for trespassing.

Norlin Quad, where the 4/20 smoke out is usually held, will be closed to all people, not just visitors, on April 20, and in order to make it clear that no one is welcome on the Norlin Lawn, a fish-based fertilizer will be dispersed over the quad that day, The Denver Post reports.

UPDATE: According to UCF Communication Coordinator Courtney Gilmartin, SGA has so far spent $8,538.80 on Passing of the Gavel. The money for the event came from the 2011-2012 A&SF budget, specifically the SGA Executive Branch’s administration budget line.

______________________________________________________________________

Last Monday, the Student Union’s Pegasus Ballroom was reserved for an annual event funded by SGA called The Passing of the Gavel.

Every year SGA holds this event, essentially in its own honor, mainly to praise the current student body president’s administration and to formally hand off it’s powers to the newly elected representatives. Speeches were given and lavish awards and plaques were handed out.

The event planners went all out this year, providing an extravagant four-course meal complete with appetizers, spring salad, main course and cheesecake for dessert. Also, professional DJs and photographers were hired. In fact, guests enjoyed having their portraits taken on the red carpet in the hallway.

According to an SGA senator, the party was accountable for an estimated $8,000 to $10,000 of student dollars. This may be troubling to some, especially when tuition costs are on the rise here at UCF.

However, SGA senators don’t seem to think there is much of a problem with the spending, and enjoyed the ceremony. The same senator from above stated, “I make sure I get the most out of our budget. Sure, I’d like to see the money spent elsewhere, but the money spent on this party is really only a small fraction of SGA’s funding.”

Is this traditional UCF event too expensive for its purposes? You decide, and check back to Knightnews.com for updates on SGA spending.

Knightnews.com stopped by the Knight Library St.Patty’s Day festivities to see how the party turned out, and it was a huge success.

Lines of people stretched all around the block party fence, waiting to get a chance to go into one of the craziest block parties in Orlando. Partygoers enjoyed Irish Car Bombs, Green Beer, and Guinness Drinks all day and into the night. Everyone dressed to theme, with one person donning nothing but green apron, and anotherwho dyed their hair completely green!

Overall, the event turnout was huge, and even inside Knight Library/Dungeon it was packed to the brim. Knightnews.com put together a video that shows the night in a nutshell:

“What are you doing for spring break?” Is a question we’ve all been hearing for the past few weeks here at UCF. Spring break 2012 should be a wild one as students plan to take their festivities to well known party cities in Florida and off the coast. Here’s a rundown of some of the most popular places to go this year.

Panama City Beach

This is the most popular destination for college students in Florida. It attracts tons of students from UCF, UF and FSU each year, and for good reasons. For one, the beaches are truly beautiful. On top of that, Panama City goers rage to no end. They enjoy concerts, massive beachside parties, and hitting up the many local bars and clubs at night. Last year, celebrities from the cast of Jersey Shore and The Real World and music artists like LMFAO and Roscoe Dash even showed up to party here.

Cruises to the Caribbean and Mexico

Another very popular option students are taking this year: cruises. With group rates and vacation packages available, it’s not too hard to find a cruise that fits a student’s price range. It’s obvious what goes on during these three to six day excursions: drinking, partying, good eats, and relaxation.

Cancun

Cancun is still a top choice for college students during spring break. If you want to spend your time partying it up on some of the most stunning beaches in the world, this is the place to go. Much like Panama City, there will be all out ragers by the beach and the pool that feature guest DJ’s and contests. At night, students will enjoy Cancun’s world renowned club scene. It gets crazy, and the clubs often stay open until the sun comes up. Oh, and the big kicker here? the drinking age is 18!

Miami and South Florida

Since a lot of Floridian college students hail from South Florida, many have decided to head home this spring break. But that doesn’t mean they won’t have any fun. The party scene in Miami tends to get pretty exciting during this time of year. Not only will partying on the beach be awesome (drinking is allowed) but the famous South Beach nightlife will be in full swing. DJ’s from all over the world will be heading to Miami this year to perform. The only place in south FL you’ll want to avoid is Fort Lauderdale. According to this article and some unhappy spring breakers over the past few years, Fort Lauderdale isn’t the college spring break destination it used to be.

Knightnews.com stopped by Sigma Pi’s annual ACE (Altruistic Campus Experience) philanthropy that helps raise canned goods for the Knights Helping Knights Food Pantry.

During these tough economic times, the Knights Helping Knights Food Pantry is out to help students in need of food, clothing, and other consumable items. It is located in the UCF Ferrell Commons room 171 and serves approximately 2,000 students per semester.

Sigma Pi helped out Knights Helping Knights by holding their philanthropy at Memory Mall.

Sigma Pi is trying to get everyone campus-wide involved by making the philanthropy into a competition to see who can build the most creative tower out of their cans. Many students and organizations were getting very creative with this competition, using spoons, forks, and glad plastic bags to build mini-castles.

The judges for these castles were Miss Orlando, Miss UCF, and Sigma Pi’s very own Seth Iskowitz.

Iskowitz, who organized the philanthropy, told Knightnews.com that this year was a success, being that they raised over 2,500 cans to help the needy.

On Saturday afternoon February 11th, Kelby Wegner was driving his car up the ramp of garage B and found an iPad on the ground. Being a “good citizen” and doing the “Knight Thing,” Wegner turned in the device to the UCF Police Department immediately, a police spokesman said.

“It is not every day when a student comes to the UCF Police Department to turn in an expensive piece of property, but we were pleased to find Mr. Kelby Wegner doing the right thing. He is an outstanding citizen for the UCF community,” said Chief Richard Beary.

Wegner was given the UCF Police challenge coin and a certificate of appreciation in honor of his honesty and outstanding character and citizenship. The challenge coin is only given to outstanding individuals who help the police and the university community.

The property was later returned hours later to the owner, who was extremely pleased her iPad had been returned.
