The University of Central Florida has officially filed its appeal to a higher court after an Orange County jury awarded the parents of Ereck Plancher a $10 million verdict.

KnightNews.com covered the wrongful death lawsuit the parents of the UCF football player — who died during a workout — brought against UCF’s private athletic association during last summer’s trial.

Even though UCF chose to privatize its athletics corporation as a direct support organization, which allows UCF to keep secret certain information that open records law would otherwise require UCF to disclose, UCF has insisted the private athletics corporation should be treated as a public state agency when it comes to a $200,000 cap on lawsuits public agencies enjoy. A reason UCF gave was because President John Hitt has control over the private corporation.

The judge disagreed UCF’s private athletics corporation should be immune to the full payment. That decision is one that UCF plans to appeal. See an interview with UCF spokesman Grant Heston we shot right after the verdict came down last year, where he discusses other issues planned for the appeal:

Note from the Editor: Knightnews.com was sent this article by Catherine Bruno, Ann Hefferin’s best friend and roommate during the time of her death. With the 2011-2012 academic school year coming to a close, Catherine told us she wanted to share her perspective of the tragic night, and shed light on the situation to show what kind of person Ann was.

Ann Hefferin, My Roommate and Friend

By: Catherine Bruno

As the academic year comes to a close, I see it fitting to write a tribute to my dear friend and roommate Ann Hefferin.

I met Ann during our freshman year of high school. We became fast friends and were together all the time. Our high school boyfriends were best friends too and the four of us spent countless hours together.

Ann and I shared very similar morals and values. We never got into arguments and were always on the same page. Although we spent most of our time together, we never ran out of things to talk about, in fact it seemed like there wasn’t enough time in a day to talk.

The friendship we had didn’t stop after senior year; we decided to go to UCF and room together. We put down our housing money before most of our classmates had even decided which school they were attending. The thought of living together, being on our own, and starting college together was something we couldn’t wait to start.

After attending Summer B at UCF together, we moved in early to our dorm in Lake Claire. We went on the LEAD Scholar’s REEL Retreat the week before school started. Once school began on Monday it felt surreal living together. We shopped for our bathroom and room accessories months in advance and finally, we were all settled in our new place. Ann and I bought our books for the semester, went grocery shopping, and had mapped out our agendas for the week by that first Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday August 24th, Ann decided to go out to a party with Delta Delta Delta at the Sigma Chi house.

When Ann came home she mentioned that she had a few drinks, which was a first for her, but she was fine. I was anxious to hear about her night and asked her all about it. She took out the trash in the kitchen, ate a little snack, and then got ready for bed. We talked for a while before saying good night to each other around 12:30am.

The early morning, which is forever etched into my memory, began at 3:14am. I was woken by pounding on my door and at first I was so disoriented I didn’t know where it was coming from. Finally I shouted: “Who is it??” Ann replied: “Catherine it’s Ann I need help.”

When I came out of my room I found a sick and exhausted Ann. She kept telling me that she was really sorry and that she didn’t know what was wrong.

Ann’s symptoms escalated from a stomach ache to chest pains and at 3:53am I called 911 for help. By that point, Ann had stopped breathing and the voice on the other end of the line gave me instructions to perform CPR. The rescue team and I were able to get Ann’s heart beating again. However, once she was transported to the hospital, her heart stopped a final time and the emergency team couldn’t revive her.

The long awaited autopsy results did very little to ease our sorrow. The final verdict was Group B Streptococcus, a bacterial infection that entered Ann’s blood stream and caused her organs to shut down. any questions were left unanswered due to lack of medical research which added to our heartache.

Ann’s passing left a giant hole in my heart, and as President Hitt said at the Eternal Knights Memorial Service: “It will never be filled.”

With every day that passes I wish Ann were right here with me. I lost my roommate, my classmate, and most importantly my best friend. There is an emptiness that rests inside of me that will never go away. I cherish all of the memories we made together and look at pictures of the two of us to keep me going. Words can’t describe my sadness and I long for the day when we will be reunited in heaven.

Ann’s passing has taught me to be thankful for my life and not to sweat the small stuff. I live by the words of her favorite Bible verse: “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength” – Philippians 4:13

I’m extremely grateful for my family and friends, the Hefferin family, the Bishop Moore High School community, and the UCF community. Without your love and support I would not have been able to complete this academic year. Thank you and remember Ann. She was a beautiful person inside and out. Her spirit will forever live on in those who knew and loved her.

A small stovetop fire caused a total of four fire engines, two ambulances, and UCFPD to respond. Although there were no aesthetic damages done to the outside of the Knights Circle building, one resident was treated for chest pains.

The fire happened at roughly 4:00pm on Thursday afternoon. When Knightnews.com arrived at the scene someone from inside the building yelled for a paramedic. There were no visible flames from outside and we received word that it was just a stove fire caused from a pot on the stove.

The fire may have done minor damage inside as you can see from the pictures below that some furniture was outside.

Thousands overran Sanford Thursday evening during the rally for the arrest of the killer of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Martin died on February 26, 2012 when a self-appointed head of the Neighborhood Watch, George Zimmerman, shot him. There is much controversy surrounding the incident, and it has since gained international attention.

A Trayvon Martin supporter holds up a rose on March 22, 2012 at the rally held in Sanford, FL, the shooting site of 17 year old Martin, who was killed on February 26, 2012 by George Zimmerman, a Sanford resident. (Tahwanah Reeves/KnightNews.com)

Most of the dissent surroundings what many believe to be the inaction of local law enforcement to arrest Zimmerman in connection with Martin’s death. Zimmerman has admitted to the killing, but claims it was in self-defense and that he was within his rights.

Many doubt the validity of his claims due to the fact that Trayvon was unarmed except for the hoodie he was wearing along with a bag of Skittles and some ice tea.

Many in the rally actually wore hoodies, adorned their signs with Skittles bags, and brought empty tea cans.

Zimmerman’s claims were further brought into public scrutiny when the Mayor of Sanford, bowing to public sentiment, released the 911 tapes of both Zimmerman and Martin from that night.

The crowd had a multitude of slogans that day, but the most recurring was, “No Rest until an Arrest!” That sentiment was shared by local UCF students in attendance.

“I really thought this was a good cause,” says UCF MBA student Dan’elle Bellamy. “It’s not just black people [here]; everybody’s out.”

That was echoed by the mother of the victim, Sybrina Fulton, who said, “This is not just about black and white. It’s about right and wrong.”

Fulton, and Trayvon’s father, Tracy Martin, repeated to the crowd that Trayvon was not just their son, but that he was everyone’s son and that Trayvon Martin was every person in America.

To support that philosophy many in the crowd could be seen with signs and shirts that read, “I am Trayvon Martin.”

“I really liked it. It was moving, so many people showed up and nothing got out of control,” said Mallory Minor, a University of Central Florida Junior in International Relations who also attended the rally.

Reverend Al Sharpton comforts Tracy Martin at a rally on March 22, 2012 calling for the arrest of George Zimmerman. (Tahwanah Reeves/KnightNews.com)

Minor tried to organize a group of students to attend the rally as a way to signify UCF’s student support of the Martin family.

Yet, UCF students were not the only defenders of Trayvon Martin.

“You can’t defend yourself against a pack of Skittles and some ice tea…don’t talk to us like we stupid,” declared notable Civil Rights icon, Reverend Al Sharpton.

And he was not alone in his sentiments. Sharpton went on to denote the various high profile individuals who stood on stage with him.

The list went across professions, ages, and experiences, but most fell into the category of noted Civil Rights or civil/social justice leaders, such as Judge Greg Mathis, nationally syndicated talk radio host Michael Baisden, NAACP President Ben Jealous, members of Florida and other state’s Legislature, and even Congresspersons at the Federal level.

“I didn’t come here by myself. Get ready Florida. You thought it was hot. The heat just arrived,” said Sharpton who is determined to see Zimmerman arrested.

Also, Sharpton and the NAACP demand that the law enforcement agency over the case be investigated and those officials directly involved removed for what they believe to be an inability to uphold the standards of the law.
They got part of their wish, as announced part way through the rally.

University of Central Florida (Orlando) MBA student Dan’elle Bellamy wears a white hoodie as one of thousands showing support for Trayvon Martin on March 22, 2012 at the rally held in Sanford, FL. (Tahwanah Reeves/KnightNews.com)

The prosecutor voluntarily removed himself from the case and the Sanford Chief of Police stepped down temporarily, both on the same day as the rally.

But the Empowerment Movement, a national coalition of predominantly black churches, civil/social justice organizations, community leaders and Greek-letter organizations, working to increase civil and social justice in America in the wake of, and specifically in relation to, the Trayvon Martin killing, is not done yet.

There will be a March on Monday, March 26, 2012 from Centennial Park in Sanford, to Sanford’s Civic Center, where the City Commission meeting will be held.

Fulton will speak again on this day and concerned citizens will rally once again for Trayvon Martin.

Though the shooting was a one time occurrence, it will have far reaching effects into the future.

The killing has brought out public unrest in regards to racial discrimination, state gun and self-defense laws, as well as national hate crime standards.

None of these are simple or short term conversations, and none are going away soon as people seem tired of dealing with what they feel to be recurring issues.

As Reverend John T. Long, III, who chaired the event said, “It is a sin, too long black life has been undervalued. It is a sin too long do we sit back in silence and it happens over and over again.”

The Rev. Al Sharpton was in Sanford Thursday conducting a rally for justice for Trayvon Martin, 17, who was shot and killed in Sanford about a month ago. The man who shot him, George Zimmerman, was not arrested – because he claimed it was self-defense and that he felt threatened by the teen.

Martin only had skittles and iced tea on him, however, and no weapon. KnightNews.com carried live tweets from the rally as it happened.

UCF students also attended the rally. Mallory Minor told KnightNews.com before the rally she had already recruited almost a dozen fellow UCF students to attend the rally. She’s made calls, sent emails and sent up a Facebook event. Minor is outraged by the situation.

“This atrocity is not only on discriminatory against African Americans but our community as a whole,” Minor told KnightNews.com. “If possible, maybe we can set up a meeting place for all other UCF students. I think it’d be really great if UCF could stand together in this rally and press the importance that this act is to our community.”

The rally for justice for Trayvon Martin started at 7 p.m., at Fort Mellon Park in Sanford.

Also Thursday, Sanford police Chief Bill Lee temporarily stepped aside in response to the tensions in the community. That decision came after MSNBC’s Andrew Mitchell grilled Sanford’s mayor about ousting the chief. See the interview, below:
The Orlando Sentinel is also reporting the man who claims he shot Martin in self defense, George Zimmerman, has been kicked out of Seminole State College.
