On Saturday, the Kappa Sigma fraternity hosted their second annual Key West Fest at their house on Greek Row. Two hundred and thirty tons of sand covered the Kappa Sigma parking lot, along with a tiki style theme that made the parking lot look like Key West.

The purpose was to raise money for the Military Heroes campaign benefiting the Fisher House foundation. Over 7,000 dollars was raised for the foundation, which helps provide low-cost lodging to veterans and military families. The money raised this year more than doubled the year before.

Mike Skinner, the philanthropy chair for Kappa Sigma told us, “Sororities come out to compete in events such as relay races, sand castle building, pyramid plunder, and tug-of-war. They are fighting to be crowned the Queens of Key West.” Knightnews.com stuck around to take some pictures of the event which you can see below:

Wednesday afternoon the Interfraternity Council delegates met to discuss possibly ending a tent rush at Memory Mall, which UCF fraternities have had since last spring.

The fraternity delegates and IFC Executive board did not come to a consensus on the matter, but two different ideas arose, that will be voted on next Wednesday, March 28th.

SIGN UP TO WIN THE NEW IPAD – ONE OF OUR LUCKY READERS WILL!

It was presented to have rush tents at neither Memory Mall or Lake Claire, but instead encourage a 365-day a year rush. However, there would still be an official rush week at the beginning of fall and spring. IFC President Mike Irene told the delegates that there still would be a Pegasus Ballroom event the first night of rush and an end of the week event to wrap it all up.

Matt Zimmerman, the VP of Recruitment for IFC and brother of Delta Upsilon told Knightnews.com, “We are trying to have all of the fraternities move from having two main periods during the year to get their new members and recruit 365 days a year.” He went on to say, “It is something that has been talked about for a while, but always pushed aside. I believe it would be best for all 18 fraternities if we didn’t set up a formal recruitment for them like we have in the past.”

Like Us For UCF News Updates on Facebook:

The matter was debated by Delta Tau Delta delegate Chris Boley who said, “It seems like you guys don’t think we’re recruiting 365 days a year, but we are. We are not using tent rush as a crutch, most freshman don’t have cars, so it is for their benefit not ours.”

Without a tent rush, fraternities would have individual events all week instead of having any type of unified tent rush where all the fraternities are recruiting next to each other.

Phi Delta Theta president Tal Wollschlaeger voiced his opinion by bringing up an idea of moving tent rush back to Lake Claire, and having the four on campus fraternity houses rush out of their houses. He said, ” If you want to get rid of tent rush then bring us Greek Park 2″, he added, “UCF is not FSU, UF, or Alabama. When there is only four Greek Fraternity houses on campus, in order to have a successful rush, tent rush needs to stay until there is a real alternative.”

Knightnews.com will be there at the next meeting to update you with the outcome.

UPDATE: THE OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION WE JUST GOT ON THE OUTCOME OF THIS HEARING

A coalition of college Progressives could take over Student Government at one of Florida’s major state universities, depending on the outcome of an FSU SGA Elections Commission meeting that was scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

We’re monitoring Twitter for live updates, published by Tallahassee-based tweeter we noticed sharing info on the meeting:

The meeting is over alleged violations against FSU’s majority Ignite Party. The FSU SGA president-elect, Rueben Stokes, is a member of the majority Ignite Party, which enjoys the support of many in the Greek Community. KnightNews.com is working our contacts to get an update on the meeting, and will post it when we do.

The situation, according to a release from the Progress Coalition, stems from allegations that Ignite did not file financial disclosures related to campaign finances. UCF, on the other hand, doesn’t have any rules requiring candidates account for who donates to their campaign. So, this situation is an interesting case for UCF SGA to observe, as it could be a glimpse into the one of the outcomes of requiring candidates to account for who is donating to their campaign.

Meanwhile, the majority party leader, Rueben Stokes, broke his silence on the issue over Facebook, just hours before the meeting. Stokes published a letter to his fellow party members.

KnightNews.com has obtained the letter, and pasted it below. Click for it to be enlarged, and check back for updates on the breaking situation in the state’s capital.

Talks of the IFC breaking away from the Greek Council have officially been tabled.

Just over a week ago, Knightnews.com received word about the Interfraternity Council (IFC) possibly breaking away from the Greek Council.

This means that the IFC would be able to govern itself without going through the jurisdiction of the Greek Council.

Breaking away or not, each had it’s pros and cons.

Breaking away could have made it possible to where the IFC would be able to think about revoking the six week dry period at the beginning of the semester that was implemented by UCF.

However, breaking away would not make it so every fraternity would be able to do whatever they wanted. Breaking away from the Greek Council would mean that the fraternities would still have to get socials approved by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (OFSL).

Through much debate and deliberation, the IFC decided to table the talks and work on coming to terms with the Greek Council.

Interfraternity Council President Mike Irene told Knightnews.com, ” We are working to create a long term solution to better both the greek council and the individual councils and keep a positive attitude to improving our greek community and the university as a whole”

UCF’s Spring 2012 Rush Week kicks off Monday, January 23, where men thinking of joining a UCF IFC fraternity get a chance to find out which one is for them.

Monday, January 23: Student Union

Wednesday Jan. 25 & Thursday Jan. 26: Memory Mall Rush Tents 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The Memory Mall area, the open area in between the UCF Student Union and the UCF Arena, will be filled with tents of members form each IFC fraternity. Unlike the Monday Student Union event where only a small table of members from each fraternity are present, the tent event allows fraternities to bring out their entire brotherhood to meet potential pledges. It runs from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Friday
Each fraternity will have its own wrap up event. By this point, if you haven’t picked a fraternity to join, you should have it narrowed down. Contact each fraternity you’re still considering and find out where and when they’re meeting up Friday night for the last night of rush.

Check out the individual events of each fraternity here: RushIFCUCF
