Phi Delta Theta fraternity’s flag football team will take on defending champions “Watch The Throne,” better known as the “Immortals,” in the Comp A Flag Football tournament at 10 p.m. tonight on turf field 5.

The match up comes after Phi Delt and the Immortals, seeds 4 and 2 respectively, remained undefeated in the regular season, with each team suffering only one tie.

Tonight’s winner receives a coveted UCF IM Sports championship t-shirt, along with funding to represent UCF in a national tournament in either New Orleans or College Station, Texas.

But the game has impacts beyond the T-shirt.

Right now Phi Delt is ranked No. 1 in Greek Cup points, and they’d receive additional bonus points for remaining undefeated and winning this top comp division tournament. Phi Delt is hoping to win its third Greek Cup in a row this year — something that’s never been done by a fraternity ever at UCF.

As for the Immortals, already this year they have achieved regional tournament victories at the Swamp Bowl in Gainesville and the UCF regional tournament here on campus, thus earning bids to both national tournaments already. So for the Immortals, winning this game in a decisive manner becomes more a matter of pride and a statement — rather than a ticket to nationals, which they already earned.

Here is the full list of championship match ups and scores, starting as early as 7 p.m. tonight:

Comp A: Watch the Throne vs. Phi Delta Theta | Starts at 10 p.m., check back for updates
Comp B: Jetsons vs. Beaches Love Us
Women’s Comp: Bad Girls Club vs. Ballhers
CoRec Comp: Women Lie, Men Lie vs. Forever We Bossin | Women Lie, Men Lie leading 27-0
Rec A: Lumberjacks vs. Kibbles & Vicks
Rec B: Vick in the Box vs. The Hateocracy | Winner: Vick in a Box 21-0
Women’s Rec: The AllKnighters vs. Razmataz | Winner: AllKnighters 19-0
CoRec: Smokeywear vs. Show Me Your TD | Smokeywear leading 20-10

Increased space will offer students more options

ORLANDO, FL — The Recreation and Wellness Center at the University of Central Florida is receiving a major facelift. Construction began in June 2009 on a $21.7 million expansion project that will increase the size of the current center by approximately 40,000 square feet.

James Wilkening, Director of UCF’s Recreation and Wellness Center will help oversee a project that will bring increased fitness space, which will allow for more free weights, cardio, and fitness machines.

“The new addition will basically double the amount of machines that are in the current space,” said Wilkening. “We currently have about 89 machines and will be looking to add about another 90. We’re still working some demo machines in the current space for student input.”

In addition, the expanded area will have a multipurpose room, a lap pool, an athletic training room, an outdoor adventure room, and four new racquetball courts.

“The multipurpose room will be predominantly for intramural sports and clubs. They might be utilized for a few workout classes but that will all come down to need,” said Wilkening. At the moment, there are no plans to add new classes. “The lap pool will be relocated but it will remain an outdoor lap pool,” he said.

Planning began in 2004 that would allow for an expansion to the original structure based completely on student need. The indication for more space came from student surveys conducted in summer 2004 and fall 2005.

Funding for the project came completely from the state’s CITF, or Capital Improvement Trust Fund. These funds accrue over time from student fees and are then allocated back to the university based on the need for auxiliary facilities that benefit students.

“The funds are allocated every 3 to 5 years by the state,” said Chad Morgan, Associate Director for Programs. “The state receives 100 percent of the funds from student CITF fees that are charged over tuition.”

The current fee for Florida college students is $2.44 per credit hour. Wilkening said the project was able to go forward because of the combination of two allocations. “We actually received one for $11.7 million and another for $10 million to get to that final number,” he said.

In order to allow for the expansion project, several other structures were either shifted or removed.

“We actually had to demolish building 15,” said Morgan. “Initially, that’s where all the offices for Intramural Sports were housed prior to the construction of the Rec Center. It was being used mostly for storage and we had space in there for two full-time staff members. The [second floor] was condemned because the stairs were not up to code.”

“The ROTC trailers were relocated just across from their previous location,” said Wilkening. “Because we had to clear the area, the sand volleyball courts will not be going back up.”

The project is expected to receive a LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, the nation’s leading coalition for advancing buildings that are environmentally responsible. Two other UCF buildings recently received LEED certification. The Physical Sciences Building on the main campus became the university’s first LEED Gold building while the College of Medicine at UCF’s Health Sciences Campus in Lake Nona will be the only LEED Silver medical school in the state.

The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2010 with a target date of November 30th. “Our plan is to use about two weeks in December to get everything moved in and have an extra two weeks built in to allow for any final touches or any issues we may have,” said Wilkening.

Construction is currently on time and administrators hope to have their Grand Opening in spring 2011.

After one year of battling it out on the courts and fields of UCF’s IM Sports facilities, the Greek Cup Champions have been announced — and it was done via twitter.

“Delta Delta Delta and Phi Delta Theta clinch Greek Points Trophy for 2009. It’s Tri -Delt’s 4th (first since 2001) and Phi-Delt’s first ever,” read today’s tweet from @IMSports.

Ironically, the win for Tri Delt and Phi Delt comes after they spent the week together as homecoming partners. KnightNews.com reached Phi Delt sports chair Tommy Oreste for his reaction.

“I’m extremely proud of Phi Delt and what we have accomplished,” Oreste said. “Our hard work has finally paid off and we look forward to defending our title again next year.”

We’re still trying to get a hold of Tri Delt for reaction. If you are a sister who’d like to give a comment, post it below under your facebook name, or e-mail us at news@knightnews.com, and we’ll include it here.

The race for this year’s Greek Sports Cup is on, and KnightNews.com just got a YouReport cell phone video submitted by Phi Delta Theta, showing clips from its basketball game against Alpha Tau Omega Wednesday night.

If you have video or pictures from one of your recent games, or if you’d like to shoot some of your next game, send them to YouReport@KnightNews.com, or just upload them to our Facebook.com/KnightNews fan page, and we’ll embed them on the site.

Basketball is one of three major fall sports fraternities compete in to win the Greek Sports Cup. The others in fall are 7 on 7 flag football and baseball. Whoever wins the most games gets the most points. Whoever has the most points from spring and fall wins the cup, and is named the overall Greek IM Sports champion of the year.

So far this year, Phi Delt is leading with 1155 points, Alpha Tau Omega is second with 1043 and Lambda Chi Alpha is third with 1032 overall points from spring and fall, according to the most recent stats posted by UCF’s Rec and Wellness Center.

However, Phi Delt’s back-to-back wins against Alpha Tau Omega, including Tuesday’s 46-23 win in basketball and last Wednesday’s 19-0 win in flag football, will likely allow Lambda Chi to move up to second place, creating a Lambda Chi vs. Phi Delt race for the overall top spot.

On Tuesday, Lambda Chi defeated Alpha Epsilon Pi in an intense double-overtime game. Currently, Lambda Chi and Phi Delt are the only two undefeated basketball teams in Gold League, the IM Sports top division. The two top teams will meet in week 5 in what will be a crucial match-up in the race for the Greek Cup.

Up until Wednesday night, Phi Delt, Lambda Chi and AEPi were the only undefeated Gold League football teams, although Lambda Chi and AEPi tied in week three. Phi Delt maintained its first place ranking in football by edging out AEPi by one point Wednesday in an intense 13-12 game, dropping AEPi to third place behind second place Lambda Chi.

But Lambda Chi still has a chance to ruin Phi Delt’s perfect football season. The two teams will face off Oct. 21 in what is shaping up to be a crucial game for both sides hoping to claim a championship in football and the Greek Cup this year.

Baseball starts Thursday, where Theta Chi tends to be more competitive, making the race for a Gold League Baseball championship less predictable than basketball or football. Black League baseball should also prove competitive, with FIJI, Sigma Pi and AEPi all hoping to claim the top spot there, and then move up to Gold League next year.

In Black League football, Sigma Pi and Kappa Sigma are both fighting for the top spot. In Wednesday’s game, Kappa Sigma edged out Sigma Pi in a low-scoring, frustrating contest, in which a safety by Kappa Sig resulted in the only points scored, to give them a 2-0 win.

If Kappa Sig wins its remaining two games, the team will win the Black League championship, and then move into Gold League football, replacing whoever comes in last place in Gold League this year.

Remember to send your pictures or videos of your games to YouReport@KnightNews.com, or just upload them to our Facebook.com/KnightNews fan page, so we can embed them on the site during our Race For the Greek Cup coverage.
