What Do You Want in UCF’s Student Union?
KnightTalk, Videos — By Kyle Sorice on August 3, 2009 at 5:14 pmEach week, Kyle Sorice of KnightNews.com will ask a random sampling of UCF students and faculty a “question of the week,” so that we can give a voice to the average UCF student or staff member about hot topics.
This week, Kyle asked students what they’d like to see replace the Park Ave. Jr. CD store in UCF’s Student Union.
Will it be a restaurant? Will it be one you like? What about another test-prep center? There’s no word yet on what Union officials will decide, but here’s what students said when we asked: “What would you like to see in the Student Union?”

Feedback can never hurt asdf! The lounge could certainly be improved.
You’d be surprised, anyone with the money to pay the rent and an acceptable idea (our feedback really doesn’t matter) can rent the space and do it, UCF really doesn’t do much of anything to protect Aramark beyond the meal plan itself.
I think place like Ben & Jerry’s that has many options and is still Earth friendly would be a great addition to the UCF Student Union, the closest one to the school is 20 min away unlike taco bell which is 5 min. Whatever it is, I just hope that it has a not so outrageous price range and gives students another option to eat.
I agree with Kelly, a mini grocery mart that actually has good food would do very well with those of us living on campus, but it’ll never happen since it’d directly compete with the adjacent Knight Stop which is semi-sponsored by the university through meal plan contracts (its owned by Aramark, same as RFoC & Knightros).
I think a really cool idea would be maybe a small supermarket, or something that sells fresh produce. all the “convenient stores” on campus sell nothing but unhealthy, prepackaged crap. I think that a lot of students resort to eating junk food on campus because there are very limited options for reasonably priced healthy foods. So I think maybe some kind of local fresh produce place could be awesome.
I think it should be a carpetball/fooseball area Most school’s student unions have a hang out place with that kind of stuff.
I know at one point there was an arcade on campus, but they closed shop. A music store seems logical, but most businesses are cutting back. Are their any businesses/organizations on campus that have bad locations and could benefit by being somewhere more central?
I’d like to see an arcade/gaming center in there that can also sell the games/music/movies. I think we have enough food choices in the union.
D: what are you talking about? the vast majority of the restaurants on campus are not corporate chains: phat philly, wackadoos, asian chao, salsa2go, volcanoes, boba tease, balagan, tailgaters, koyoto, corner cafe, joffreys, southside (assuming I remembered everything, thats 12 restaurants).
The chain restaurants on campus are Subway, Qdoba, Burger King, Sbarro, Mrs Fields, Java City, Starbucks, Einsteins, Red Brick, Maggie Moos, Smoothie King, Jimmy Johns, Chickfila, the Marketplace, which is 14, which means our campus is pretty close to 50% non-chains (with several smaller chains). What ratio would make UCF not greedy? Most people do prefer chains, myself included. (And space is readily available on campus in Knights Plaza for anyone who wants to start up a new private business)
A freshly made Chicken stir fry place or salad place would be the best on campus..The problem is that UCF is greedy and only wants the chains that can afford and are willing to bid the highest price. It would be soo much better to put independent local businesses started by UCF graduates rather than greedy corporate low quality food places like BK, Panda and Sabaros!
Yeah, I agree with the Taco Bell thing, but Taco Bell is a Pepsi thing so I highly doubt we’ll see something like that there.
If we could have anything, I think a Tijuana Flats would be amazing on-campus. Started by a UCF student, it would be a great thing to have.
Realistically, in terms of retail, maybe a movie/game store or something? Or something with healthy food. But a lounge or some “fun” thing to do would be nice.
We already are getting a sushi bar on campus in Knights Plaza where Nature’s Table Cafe used to be. I’d love a Taco Bell but since its Pepsi there’s no chance of getting it in the union.
No more sushi, I get nauseous every time I walk by Knight Stop already.
Whatever it ends up being, hope some entrepreneurial Knight sets up shop, I enjoy having small businesses on campus rather than big chains.
A kitchen will be hard to fit but a Taco Bell would be nice. Or… Play N Trade.
Too bad Park Ave had to go but a vegetarian bar would be really nice. We need some better food options on campus. I also think a Sushi Bar would be a good idea.
I want to see a vegetarian bar. How many healthy stops are there on campus?
