Imagine a world where The Sims or Second Life was you controlling an actual person.
That is the world that Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall) created in the movie “Gamer.”
In his world, people who purchase the ability can control actual human beings whose brain cells have been replaced with cells created by Castle. This game took the world by storm and everyone wanted in – either to control, or be controlled.
Ken Castle then proposes a way to bail the United States’ out of debt; he created “Slayers” a ‘game’ in which real people take prison inmates through a terrifying first-person shooter world.
If the inmate makes it through thirty sessions then they are free. If not, well, they were on death row anyways, right? Enter the protagonist, Kable, as played by Gerard Butler (“300”, “The Ugly Truth”, “P.S. I Love You”), the only prison inmate to make it through twenty-seven rounds.
This movie is intense. It is set up to truly make the viewer believe they are playing a high tech video game.
Avid gamers will drool over the movie, while non-gamers will drool over the front man and the leading lady (Amber Valletta).
The acting is superb and the direction of the film is top-notch. The only distracting part is the random flash of controls a gamer might see – “Save point in 300m” or the sight from a gun in the middle of the screen. This, however, does add to the video game perception and makes for a very unique film.
All in all, the film appeals to not just video game addicts but to a wide audience.
It’s an action film, has elements of romance, and possesses a big element of surprise and mystery. This is one to see in theatres. The cinematography is made for the big screen.
If you have a few extra dollars, and a lot of adrenaline to spare, go see this film. You won’t regret it.
