Those on campus earlier this afternoon might have noticed a large cloud of smoke rising from just past campus.
Orange County Fire Rescue Communications received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting smoke and flames coming from a shed located behind the home at 14101 Allison Drive, right behind the UCF Biomolecular Research Annex.
Four people and a dog were inside the house when the shed, full of landscape equipment and cans filled with gasoline, caught fire. A bystander called 911 immediately, and rushed to alert the home owners inside, along with UCF student Nelson Nunez.
Nunez, a mechanical engineer student, was on his way back from class when he saw the flames and tried to help.
“I saw the fire, and I was the one that went inside the door,” said Nunez. “I basically took them out, and I moved their car out from the driveway, and took out the gas tanks.”
Firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after, and were able to salvage approximately 80% of the home.
