‘Thank God I Got Out Alive,’ Says Student

KnightNews.com is getting multiple reports that a shooting happened at “The Plaza” across from UCF early Friday morning.

Crime scene tape was set up in the parking lot area surrounding Deko lounge. A manager with that bar told KnightNews.com that he received reports someone was shot in the shoulder — but it wasn’t deadly.

UCF students inside the bar at the time were shocked.

“Thank God I got out alive,” Latoya Laing said on KnightNews.com’s Facebook post about the shooting. “Everything was fine. There was no fight, no argument nothing. Shots just went off and everyone ran. Someone said there was blood on the ground, but I didn’t see it. I just got out of there.”

By 2:30 a.m. only about a half-dozed squad cars from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office remained on scene. However, earlier on in the investigation, eyewitnesses told KnightNews.com they estimated about two dozen squad cars were on scene and that the shooting may have happened in or around the bar popular with UCF students.

A Deko employee told KnightNews.com the shooting happened during the club’s popular hip-hop night, where the club takes extra safety precautions by patting patrons down.

This weekend ATF and Orange County Sheriffs department are sending lots of undercover officers to bust underage drinking in Deko, Library, Fubar, and Dungeon. They are also going to be outside the liquor store looking to bust kids with fakes taking liquor to their cars. They are tired of all the problems in the Plaza and shutting the bars down for all the underage drinking is the easiest way to stop the fighting, dui’s, shootings, drunk kids getting an ambulance every night, etc. My brother is in law enforcement, they all know that the plaza is going to be targeted until these bars get shut down like TDs and Scoop. Knightnews usually runs stories on raids like this. I heard this will be the biggest one ever and many more will follow.

Way to show your blatant prejudice Ben. No where in the story did they state or imply the perpetrator’s race, yet you instantly assumed he or she was black and that black people are more likely to carry guns and/or be more aggressive than others. People like you shouldn’t be allowed to speak. In the future please keep your hateful opinions to yourself.

Also, you wanna know what kind of crowd they were hoping to bring in with a Hip-Hop night? People who like Hip-Hop. Who, according to the Billboard charts, are a majority of people in this country, which would imply that they are not predominantly from one racial group.

Next time you want to troll, please go to 4chan. They’d welcome you with open arms there, or not.

P.S. – Next time pick a name thats not as obviously fake, like Ricardo or something.

Jason what do you expect? It’s a plaza full of bars right next to the campus so of course there’s going to be underage drinking, fights, and dui’s, just like at every single other college (besides those mormons at BYU). If anything this is a positive event because maybe it will keep the high school students and freshman using fakes out of the bars for a while.

P.S. – Something like this was bound to happen. I mean what kind of crowd were they expecting to bring in with a “hip-hop” night? Change it to a “house music” night and the only blacks they would attract would be the wannabe hipsters, and they aren’t packing heat that’s for sure.

Id stay away from the Plaza for a few weekends. My brother is in law enforcement and said the police are gonna be raiding Deko, Fubar, Library, and Dungeon looking for underage drinking. They want these bars shutdown because they are a headache with all the fighting, dui’s, underage drinking, and shootings. Downtown is much safer and you can avoid the high school kids and bullets.

Someone was transported to ORMC from what I heard on the scanner.
