Just days after the UCF men’s basketball team lost senior Jeff Jordan due to “personal reasons,” the Knights will now be without senior center Dwight McCombs.
On Wednesday afternoon, the UCF Athletics Association announced that McCombs will not compete with the team for the remainder of this semester, per university policy.
“Dwight has been a valuable member of our program and we wish him best of luck in the future,” UCF head coach Donnie Jones said in a press release from UCFAthletics.com. “We appreciate Dwight’s contributions these past two years and he will continue to have our support.”
Those are the only details that have been released at this time because “policy prohibits releasing details of this matter.”
This is a big loss to the Knights frontcourt as the Knights enter the heart of their Conference-USA schedule. The 6’8″, 235-pound forward/center was a big body who provided size and toughness for the Knights.
Now, forward Josh Crittle will have to step up even more for UCF to fill the void left by McCombs. The Knights have struggled at times this year and in the past to bigger teams, but the combination of McCombs and Crittle has drastically improved the Knights physicality recently.
McCombs averaged averaged 2.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game in six starts this year. The Chicago-native was a transfer student from Miami University in Ohio.
The 12-3 Knights will have to move on without McCombs as they have some tough league matches upcoming.
UCF has started conference play at a perfect 2-0 and will return to action Wednesday night against Houston at the UCF Arena.
