The Knights officially began their follow-up campaign to the historic 2013 Fiesta Bowl run on Monday, opening up spring practices inside the Nicholson Field House.
With key offensive holes to fill, it will be intriguing to see how the lineups play out at the UCFamily Spring Game – the official end to the short spring season. O’Leary has previously made it known that he will name a starting quarterback based on what he sees in the next few weeks, entering summer workouts with a clear pecking order.
Quarterbacks Justin Holman, Tyler Harris, and Pete DiNovo will compete for the starting gig. Holman is the only one with any kind of game experience, throwing for both a touchdown and an interception in the limited action.
Whoever wins the job will lean heavily on Senior Joey Grant, who returns as the incumbent starter at center. Grant will join the receiving corps to form a stable platform to build around.
Of last year’s leading wide receivers, only Jeff Godfrey has departed, throwing stars J.J. Worton and Rannell Hall further into the spotlight. Newcomer Jackie Williams will do his best to make an impact as well in the well-established group. Williams transferred this spring from UAB, where he left ranked 4th in career receptions.
UCF will learn more and more about the chemistry of their 2014 makeup with every passing day, generating more sophisticated roles for the newcomers and players faced with new opportunities. The team will practice three days a week leading up to the game, which will be held at Bright House Networks Stadium on April 12.
