Coach O’Leary made it clear what he thought of his quarterback situation on Monday – that though he has an idea, none of the potential starters have set themselves above and beyond the others this spring.
“I think one has separated himself. He’s not where he needs to be, but he has separated himself,” he said on Saturday.
Though he had said after the spring game that he would name a starter after the weekend, O’Leary stuck to the same story he told after the exhibition.
“After watching the spring and what took place, the staff has decided that we will keep the quarterbacks in place as they have been – with Holman, DiNovo and Harris heading into the preseason,” Coach O’Leary said. “The quarterback that gives us the best opportunity to move the chains and manage the game will be under center against Penn State.”
Justin Holman will still have the first crack at first team reps this preseason, but all three quarterbacks will get time in with the starters.
“He’s just the guy heading into preseason. Hopefully, it’s the right decision and he keeps it, but I’m always going to play the people that are the most productive,” O’Leary said.
The team will return to practice on July 30, with exactly a month before the season opener in Dublin, Ireland.
