It’s no secret that UCF has been trying to open a dental school in Lake Nona for quite some time.
On Thursday, UCF will discuss requesting $73 million for the school during the five-year capital improvement plan meeting. The funding will be for the 2016-2017 school year with the money slated to come from donations and partnerships–not tuition dollars.
UCF originally announced plans in 2011 to open a dental school in 2014, but that was shot down by the Florida Board of Governors. UCF then included a dental school on a wish-list to the Board of Governors in 2013. They were hoping that plan would be approved for the 2015-2016 school year.
In a state with only three accredited dental programs, UCF is still not sure if they could move forward with the plan to open the school.
“The dental school is a possibility that we are evaluating, but we won’t know for a while whether we will move forward. It would have to go through a long process of consideration and approval,” UCF Spokesman Chad Binette said.
In the original proposed plan to open a dental school, the estimated tuition would have been $50,000 to $60,000, which is almost double the cost of the University of Florida’s tuition.
