They Came Together is a romantic comedy for those who hate romantic comedies.
The film parodies contemporary takes on love, while only occasionally pursuing humor to a fault. Its at its best when only subtly exaggerating certain aspects of the genre, but at its worst when making extreme leaps in logic, for the sake of a joke.
If you’re in the mood for a satirical comedy more in league with Airplane rather than Epic Movie, this is a movie worth considering. However, if you’re content with the latest offering from Nicholas Sparks, They Came Together will most likely leave you annoyed and disappointed.
The film stars Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd as a couple recounting the story of their relationship over dinner, with a few of their friends. The satire begins as soon as their tale does, weaving in as many modern romantic comedy cliches as possible.
From a fixation with the city of New York, to little, seemingly, god given signs that the characters should be together, They Came Together insists on making sure you don’t take anything, in the film, seriously.
Although the bizarre style may be hard for some to swallow, it’s the best aspect of the movie and what makes it hilarious at times. The movie industry has lacked truly humorous parodies for some time, and They Came Together shows there is still a place for the niche genre.
