Diane and Arlen Chase, UCF’s Indiana Jones team, are in the final round of voting for a contest to have their site named the best archaeology site in the world.

The Chases have spent 30 years in partnership with Belize’s Institute of Archaeology excavating the Maya site at Caracol, Belize, the largest Mayan site in Belize. Their findings and usage of LIDAR (laser) technology have helped modern day society understand how the ancient Mayan city that supported over 144,000 people operated.

So far, they have beaten other storied civilizations such as Pompeii in Italy, Sterkfontein in South Africa, Petra in Jordan, and the city of Troy in Turkey.

The Chases only have one more opponent in the way–the Angkor Wat–located in tropical forests of Cambodia, before they are named the best site in the world. Voting ends at midnight on Friday, and a winner will be announced on Saturday, Oct. 18.
