UCF received recognition from South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier in a press conference announcing his resignation, hinting the Sept. 26 game may have been a tipping point in the decision to move on.

“If something is inevitable, let’s do it right now,” Spurrier said, after reaching a conclusion on Sunday. The former head coach began to feel the time was coming after the USC vs UCF game, even though South Carolina won 31-14, noting it was a “struggle,” according to USAToday.

The Knights are on pace for a winless season after an atrocious 0-6 start, and Spurrier insinuated that South Carolina shouldn’t have had such a tough time against a team ravaged by injury and riddled with inexperience. UCF actually led the Gamecocks 14-9 at halftime with touchdowns from Bo Schneider and Nick Patti – neither of whom entered the season as a division one starter.

Spurrier claims that he won’t retire from coaching but will resign from his position at USC in order to make way for the team’s new leadership.

“For whatever reason, our team wasn’t as good as I thought they were going to be,” he said. “That’s just the way it happened. Hopefully our new leadership can help them become a better team.”
