“I’m not going to expect less because of what happened last year.”
That’s what University of Central Florida Football head coach Scott Frost said about his expectations for the Knights this year.
On Monday the Knights held their first open practice, followed by a press conference from coach Scott Frost and individual breakout sessions with players.
In Frost’s press conference, he talked about the offense and how they’re handling the transition to the new system. “Its probably unrealistic to think we will go from last to first,” Scott conceded “but I know when people watch our team they’re going to see a different product out there.”
Coach Frost also talked about who will play the role of starting quarterback, a position battle that has been taking place over several weeks. “Holman in particular has done an unbelievable job,” Frost stated, saying that they should have a starter announced by the middle of next week.
The quarterback position isn’t the only one up for grabs however, and Frost isn’t ruling out anyone from having a starting spot, including freshman. “I feel really good about our freshman class” Frost said, adding “I don’t care if they’re 17 or 22. If they’re the best player they’re going to play.”
“Week one will be vital to this program.” Frost said. He also made it clear, that the Knights are only focused on week one and having success in the American Athletic Conference.
There has been a lot of speculation this year about realignment with the Big 12, especially around UCF. But Frost made it clear that that is not on the minds of his team, stating “the only time I hear about the Big 12 is when I leave the building.”
The Knights open the 2016 season at home against South Carolina State on September 3.
