The UCF Knights looked to turn things around after two losses as they hosted the undefeated Stetson Hatters at John Euliano park Tuesday night but fell 7-0 in the first midweek game of the season.
The start of the game foreshadowed a bleak evening for UCF as Stetson got out to a red hot start with a 4-0 lead by the bottom of the first inning.
The Hatters were led by redshirt junior right fielder Eric Foggo who got two hits and four RBI in our at-bats, along with a big 2-run homer over left field at the top of the seventh inning to help secure Stetson’s win.
Assistant Head Coach Ted Tom, who is serving as head coach while Greg Lovelady is out with COVID-19, said he believes that this game will act as an anomaly based on the firepower they have shown at-bat so far this season.
“This is more an aberration than who we are,” Tom said. “If you asked me what I would want out of our offense, I’d say exactly what we showed this past weekend, is exactly what I’d want you to see and be able to talk about.”
The Knights were outperformed at the pitcher’s mound, collecting only four strikeouts, while the Hatter’s amassed 10 strikeouts.
The Knights’ collected four hits at 32 at-bats and no RBI through the entire contest, while leaving eight guys on base.
The Hatters drove in nine hits at 36 at-bats and seven RBI — while still leaving seven guys on base — but dominated the Knights to the 7-0 shutout.
This marked the first game the Knights have gone scoreless since the matchup against the Houston Cougars in May 2019.
With the loss, the Knights will move to 1-3 overall while the Hatters will improve to 5-0 for the season
The Knights will look to turn things around as the team travels to Oxford, Mississippi, on Friday to take on the Ole Miss Rebels for a 3-game stretch.
