Former Orlando Magic super star Shaquille O’Neal announced he has retired from basketball after 19 years in the NBA with this video he posted on his twitter.
“We did it. Nineteen years baby. I want to thank you very much, that’s why I’m telling you first, I’m about to retire. Thank you, talk to you soon”
Shaq was drafted by the Orlando Magic with the 1st overall pick in 1992. At Orlando, he averaged 23.4 points per game in his rookie season and was the 1993 rookie of the year. The Magic made it to the NBA finals in 1995 with Shaq averaging 28 points and 12.5 rebounds but lost to the Rockets.
After leaving Orlando, Shaq went to the LA Lakers winning three consecutive championships with Kobe Bryant and coach Phil Jackson. He also won another NBA Championship in 2006 with the Miami Heat.
In the 2010-2011 season, 7 ft. 1 in. Shaq played for the Boston Celtics. He suffered from an injured Achilles missing 27 games in the regular season and round one of the playoffs against the New York Knicks and briefly played in the second round losing to the Miami Heat.
