A UCF student living on campus in Lake Claire was hospitalized with an apparent case of meningitis Wednesday, Sept. 16, according to a UCF announcement issued Friday, Sept. 18.
Meningitis can be fatal and contagious, especially among college students, but UCF believes this particular case to be a “non-contagious” form.
“County health officials have determined that people who may have had direct contact with the patient do not need to take any preventive medications,” UCF’s announcement stated.
UCF says it will continue to work closely with county public health officials and follow standard response guidelines. Final test results are expected soon, and should anything change UCF says it will alert the campus community.
UCF did not release the seriousness of the patient’s condition, but its release maintained a hopeful tone.
“On behalf of the entire UCF community, our strongest hopes for a complete recovery go out to the student,” the UCF statement read.
