The UCF women’s soccer team is having an amazing non-conference start to the season.
The Knights have beaten two top ten teams. First they beat formerly No. 10 ranked Duke, and recently they have beaten the No. 4 ranked FSU.
The Knights believe that they should be ranked and they are working hard to show that.
Thursday, September 10, the Knights played into double overtime against No. 4 ranked FSU at the UCF Soccer Complex in front of a record crowd of 1,142. This number beat the old record of 1,134 dating back from the NCAA finals vs. North Carolina in 1982.
After the game, Courtney Whidden, the scorer of the only point of the match, told UCF Athletics, “I knew we could do it. This team has worked so hard and finally we are getting the recognition. We are showing everybody that we need to be ranked. We got what we deserved tonight.”
Whidden scored the only goal of the match with a header off of a free kick at 5:01 in double overtime. With that point, Whidden handed the Seminoles their only loss of the season and their only loss away from home since 2007.
With this win over the Seminoles, the Knights better their record to 4-1-1. Their only loss of the year coming against No. 1 ranked North Carolina. Also, their solo tie of the year was against LSU, which was ranked during the preseason.
The game on Thursday marked the third shut-out in a row for the Knights. It also marked the first time since 1998 that the Knights beat FSU in Orlando.
If you could not make it to the game, but you want to see some highlights from the game, you can watch them Tuesday at 8 p.m. on UCF-TV. The show will also re-air on the Bright House Sports Network at a later time.
On Sunday at 1 p.m., the Knights are hoping for another big crowd as they take on the USF Bulls. The game will be the last non-conference home game of the season. UCF encourages you to make it out for the free game.
Also, as an incentive to watch the game and to get their early, the first 125 fans will receive a free ticket to the UCF women’s volleyball match against USF Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Venue.
