Here’s another exciting installment of the weekly wrap up column, featuring the latest news regarding your favorite UCF sports.
As homecoming week gets in full swing, UCF continues to make headlines as rumors of a C-USA-Mountain West merger pick up steam.
Basketball season is a couple weeks away from starting, and many other UCF sports are in crucial parts of their respective seasons.
Football
Coming off a spanking by SMU in Dallas, the Knights traveled to Birmingham to square off against a winless UAB Blazers team. After a short week’s rest and with preparation at a minimum, the Knights had a challenge, but expectations were for a bounce back victory.
Scoring two touchdowns in their first 10 offensive plays, UCF looked like it was off to a roaring start in hopes of handing UAB its seventh loss.
Unfortunately that did not come to fruition as a struggling defense, ranked in the top five just two weeks prior, gave up 327 passing yards and 174 rushing yards in the game. The Knights now stand at 0-4 on the road and 3-4 (1-2 C-USA) overall.
Next up is a homecoming battle with Memphis in the comfort of Bright House Stadium, where the Knights remain undefeated.
Men’s Soccer
Junior Nik Robinson scored two goals in helping the Knights to defeat the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes last weekend. His performance led him to being named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week and the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Men’s soccer returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m., traveling to the Stetson Soccer Complex. This non-conference match pits 7-5-2 Stetson against the No. 11 Knights, who last year defeated the Hatters 2-0.
Stetson is on a three-game win streak, while the Knights (9-2-2) look to continue their domination in the series that they lead all-time 29-9-1. After Stetson, UCF will head to Memphis to return to conference play.
Women’s Soccer
Sunday marked the final home game for this year’s senior class in a loss to unbeaten No. 5 Memphis 3. UCF lost 3-0. The Knights, prior to the contest, were on an eight game win streak. With the loss, they drop to 10-3-5 (5-2-3 C-USA) and have one remaining game left when they travel to Southern Miss Friday.
As regular season play comes to an end, the Conference USA Tournament will start on Nov. 2 for the Knights.
Women’s Volleyball
Women’s volleyball split their pair of games this weekend. Friday, the Knights defended home court against Tulane for the first time since 2005 in a 3-0 win.
Sunday, unfortunately saw the Knights lose at Southern Miss in a five-set thriller, in which six players had double-digit kills. Despite the Knights tremendous effort, they dropped to 13-9. This weekend, UCF plays host to Houston on Friday and Rice on Sunday in a Homecoming volleyball battle.
Men’s Tennis
Three Knights saw action Saturday at the ITA Southeast Regional at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Only Mario Samson was able to come out victorious as Francesc Aulina and Mitch Thams were defeated in straight sets.
The Knights will return to action Nov. 4 at the UCF Invitational held, oddly enough, at the UCF Tennis Complex.
Women’s Tennis
This past Saturday, four Knights competed at the 2011 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Women’s Tennis Championships, held at the University of Florida’s Ring Tennis Complex.
Alexis Rodriguez and Jenna Doerfler were both able to move on to Day Two before falling. The Knights have two weeks before their final tournament of the fall season, starting Nov. 4-6 at the USF Fall Tennis Classic.
