UPDATE The Tropical Depression has strengthened into Tropical Storm Erin and currently has maximum sustained winds at 40 mph and continues moving West-NorthWest.


The fifth tropical depression of hurricane season has just formed in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean.

024036W5_NL_sm The storm currently has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph and is moving West-Northwest at 14 mph, according to the National Weather Service. The storm is expected to expected to strengthen to a tropical storm by Thursday.

The next tropical storm will be named Erin.

Another area of low pressure will head into the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday and is expected to bring rain to the Central Florida area Friday. According to the NWS, that storm has a 70% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours.
