The University of Central Florida Board of Trustees decided not to give school president John C. Hitt a raise for the coming school year but did praise him on his “outstanding” work.

The UCF trustees cited a poor economy and a tight budget as reasons behind the decision, deciding to freeze Hitt’s annual salary at the current $491,000.

The Board did, however, approve $320,000 in bonuses for some UCF administrators, including Hitt, who met university goals, and gave raises for both the university’s police department as well as other workers represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

UCF Police officers who have been with the department less than five years will receive a 3 percent raise, while more veteran officers will get a 5 percent raise.

Trustees did commend Hitt on his accomplishments over the past 21 years as the school’s president.

“I think the president is incredible,” trustee John Sprouls, who heads the board of trustees’ Compensation and Labor Committee, told the Orlando Sentinel after the meeting.
