The popular theme park, SeaWorld, has been fighting against protesters and bad public relations since the release of the documentary, “Blackfish,” and now faces a possible ban of orca whales for entertainment.

The documentary, which was released in July 2013, showed viewers a behind the scenes look at the way that the orca whales are kept in captivity and draws connections to the deaths and near death experiences of the whale trainers. One of the incidents highlighted was that of Dawn Brancheau, an experienced orca trainer at SeaWorld Orlando, who was drowned by one of the whales during a show.

Cameron Kruse, an employee of SeaWorld of two years saw the documentary, but didn’t think it was a fair representation of what SeaWorld is about.

“I thought it was very powerful and did a good job playing to emotions. However, I don’t think SeaWorld was portrayed fairly. There was no mention of the good SeaWorld does for the environment and community,” said Kruse.

The documentary spread like wildfire among viewers and SeaWorld was hit with mass amounts of criticism. Much attention has been brought to the documentary and the subject of keeping orca whales in captivity.

In the beginning of March, State Assemblyman Richard Bloom of California proposed to ban the use of orca whales for performance purposes in California aquatic theme parks. The bill also bans the breeding of whales in captivity, and proposes that all whales currently in captivity be released or transferred to sea pens at the very least.

Joseph Piazza, a junior at UCF, had the opportunity to intern at SeaWorld in the Fall and stresses SeaWorld’s main mission.

“Some animals are kept in captivity, however SeaWorld’s main goal is to rehabilitate rescued animals and eventually release them back in to the wild,” said Piazza.

There have been no decisions made about the bill proposal yet, but SeaWorld is already lobbying back, claiming that the bill is being pushed by “extreme animal activists.”

Although the bill doesn’t directly affect to SeaWorld Orlando, the Orlando park could have major repercussions afterwards if the bill gets passed and more action is taken in other states.
