Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer officiated the “vowed and proud” wedding with over 40 gay and lesbian couples participating in downtown Orlando on Tuesday morning.
The couples gathered outside of City Hall which was turned into the wedding forefront in the heart of downtown.
Mayor Dyer read the vows out loud to the couples getting married and couple-by-couple walked up to sign, stamp the paperwork and take a photo with Mayor Dyer.
The Florida gay marriage ban dates back to 1977 when Gov. Reubin Askew signed a bill that banned gays from marrying or adopting children.
Florida’s lift on the gay marriage ban makes it the 36th state to allow same-sex couples to get married.
