LGBTQ+ History Month has come to UCF, and there are a multitude of events for the community to celebrate and for allies to show their support.
These annual festivities continue through the entire month of October and have been in preparation since July. Events include: a kickoff, pride chats, National Coming Out Day, and several speeches from notable LGBTQ+ members. One of these appearances will feature Lea Delaria, the American comedian most known for her role as ‘Big Boo’ from Netflix’s Orange is the New Black.
While LGBTQ+ History Month may seem like a couple weeks of lively affairs, it means a lot to the community. UCF has only officially celebrated the month since 2012, and it wasn’t too long ago that the LGBTQ+ community had to fear repercussions from being “outed”.
As far as progressing, UCF has achieved great lengths in supporting equality and has an incredible, active community. “The LGBTQ+ community at UCF is an amazing community that is willing to educate others about the history, struggles, and accomplishments,” said Brice Yates, Coordinator at the Multicultural Student Center. “The LGBTQ+ community has truly helped to make UCF an inclusive campus.”
Though UCF has a huge LGBTQ+ community with Pride Commons and Safe Zones set up all over campus, every student can still do their part in making sure this vital community feels welcome and accepted. Whether you’re an ally or a member, taking part in this event is a fun way to celebrate the past, future, and the uniqueness that is a part of every person here at UCF.
