Beginning next week, infants and preschoolers will be able to receive the COVID-19 shot.

The Food and Drug Administration says kids under 5 are now recommended to receive the modified shots from either Moderna or Pfizer.

The Pfizer vaccine for children is only about one-tenth of the dose that an adult would be administered.

To be considered a fully vaccinated child under 5 years old, three shots of the Pfizer vaccine are required. The first two shots will be given at least three weeks apart. The final shot would then be given at least two months later.

The Moderna vaccine works differently. To be considered fully vaccinated as a child under Moderna, only two shots are required. Each shot is a quarter dose of the adult shot.

Once the first Moderna shot is given, the second shot will be administered four weeks after.

These vaccines are approved for infants starting at 6 months old.
