The Knights have gained momentum after a significant win against the Texas Longhorns, securing a historic first road victory in Big 12 Play. With 11:59 left in the game, fans anxiously watched as UCF found themselves trailing 59-46.
Texas built a 44-32 gap by halftime, with Ithiel Horton’s shots stretching the lead. UCF’s Shemari Allen’s consecutive jumpers quickly closed the gap, alongside Jaylin Sellers contributing 24 points. Allen put up a total of 17 points, with 15 of them in the half that secured the win. UCF pulled away to beat Texas 77-71.
The game was not only marked with on-court heroics but also a spirited celebration of the first away conference win. The “Horns Down” gesture, mocking Texas’ iconic “Hook ‘em Horn” hand signal, added an extra layer of excitement to the showdown.
Texas Head Coach Rodney Terry was displeased with UCF’s post-game celebration and expressed his agitation. Terry can be heard calling out UCF and making it clear to the team that he thought this was inappropriate. “That’s classless!” he repeatedly shouted to the players going down the handshake line. “Don’t do that!” He cautioned them against celebratory gestures, with some profanity infused in the statements.
Fans from all corners of college sports swiftly engaged in the controversy online, mostly supporting the Knights. Many users playfully advised Terry, “Just don’t’ lose.” Terry Mohajir, UCF Vice President and Director of Athletics, also expressed pride in the team on Twitter
This marks the Knights’ second win in the Big 12 Conference, defeating the reigning conference and tournament champs. Anticipation builds as they hope to make it a third win against fifth-ranked Houston this Saturday at the Hofheinz Pavilion.
