Late Wednesday afternoon, Hurricane Milton made landfall in the Orlando area. Some students evacuated from the area, others stayed put. Here’s the timeline of how it all unfolded.

Sunday evening, UCF announces a campus closure Tuesday – Thursday. This gave time for students to decide a plan of action and prepare for the expected landfall on Wednesday.

Tuesday morning, UCF extends campus closure through Friday, giving students time to return to campus, and allowing a smooth resume of operations. For students worried about the harsh impact Milton could have, they left the 407 area to seek shelter.

A day later, Milton touched down around early Wednesday afternoon, bringing wind and rain to the region. With the high winds, many tornado warnings were issued but it seems no damage has been done. During this time, students in on and off campus reported flickers of power and a temporary loss of Wi-Fi, but nothing too drastic.

Overall, the damage was minimal. Debris from trees was on the sides of Central Florida Boulevard. Nearby the Libra dorms, the intense wind caused a pole to collapse onto the roads. There is some flooding around campus that will clear up in a matter of days. The game against Cincinnati is good to play, and all campus operations will resume to normal on Monday. Central Florida was spared of the harsh winds and rain, but our hearts go out to the people on the west coast who are still dealing with the effects of Hurricane Milton.
