A judge in the Florida Keys has overturned the state’s ban on gay marriage, according to the associated press.
Circuit Judge Luis M. Garcia issued the ruling after a legal challenge by six gay couples that said it effectively made them second-class citizens. The ruling, issued on Thursday, will only apply to Monroe County, which covers the Keys.
His ruling, if stands, will make Florida the 20th state to allow same-sex marriage.
Judge Garcia says that licenses could be issued starting Tuesday.
Attorney General Pam Bondi argued that Florida has the sole authority to define marriage in the state. Currently, the Florida amendment defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
