Former University of Central Florida football cornerback Shaquill Griffin will start in his first season with the Seattle Seahawks against the San Diego Chargers.

Griffin has risen rapidly within the Seahawks’ fan base while building his already-stellar reputation as a UCF alumnus.

Seattle Seahawks football head coach Pete Carroll announced Griffin as the starter for their preseason game over 710 ESPN Radio. An injury to Jeremy Lane opened the opportunity for Griffin, the rookie.

“Shaq’s going to start in the game because of Jeremy being down. It’s a good opportunity for him,” Carroll said to 710 ESPN Seattle’s Brock and Salk show on Friday.

“I hope that you see the young guys jump out […] I think the second-year guys like C.J. and those guys really should show you – I don’t know about the first game – but, by the time we put two or three games together, you’re going to see why we’re so excited about them.”
