Around 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning, the subject was Baker Acted by USF Police and transported to the Hillsborough County Crisis Center by ambulance.

No criminal charges have been filed.

The gunman was not a USF student, but had some sort of “past personal relationship” with someone affiliated with the school, officials said. They think that’s what may have brought him to campus.

Due to the medical Baker Act and no criminal charges being filed, USF would not release the gunman’s name.

UPDATE 3:22 p.m.

Tampa — USF police have called off the search for the gunman and have sounded the “all clear” announcement on campus.

Students came pouring out of the library where they were hiding out for an hour when the lockdown ended, according to local reports.

“It appears the guman has left the campus,” a USF police major told local media. “We continue to monitor the situation.”

The gunman reportedly threatened to kill himself and police. He was seen driving a gold Saturn.

Update 1:45 p.m.

Tampa — A gunman has been reported on the University of South Florida’s campus roaming lot 2 near the Bioscience building, according to USF’s Web site.

USF police were enroute to the location, and Tampa police were coming as back up, according to local reports.

USF’s campus Web site advised students to stay inside and lock their doors.

Students were also told to avoid the area.

USF spokeswoman Lara Wade told TBO.com a text message with the warning went out to 55,800 people at 12:31 p.m. It’s part of the university’s early warning system, which includes sirens and warnings on digital screens throughout the campus, she told TBO.com.

Students on campus reported hearing sirens similar to those you’d hair during an air raid. An announcer than instructed students to stay indoors and away from windows.
