USF Bulls vs. UCF Knights: It May Happen Again

Football, News — By on June 1, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Now that USF’s Jim Leavitt has been ousted as the head football coach of the University of South Florida Bulls, following an embarrassing scandal where he allegedly attacked a player, it seems like the chances of restoring the War on I-4 are looking up.

According to the Tampa Tribune, UCF Coach George O’Leary gave USF’s new coach, Skip Holtz, a call within the last couple of weeks to get a feel for whether he’d be up to bringing back the rivalry.

How did USF’s coach react?

“I’m not opposed to it,” he told the Tampa Tribune, prior to leaving the Big East Conference spring meetings last Tuesday. “I like the geographical rivalries that it creates for your fan base.”

USF’s athletic director doesn’t appear to be opposed to it either, the paper reported. Although, USF clearly still does want to establish rivalries with the traditional Florida football powerhouses, like the Florida Gators up at UF, the Florida State Seminoles at FSU and the Miami Hurricanes.

KnightNews.com is still following possible NCAA football conference realignments as well, which could theoretically land both USF and UCF in the Big East together.

What do you think? Should this rivalry be restarted, or what?

  • UCF = joke says:

yeah b/c that death trap you guys call a stadium is actually worth all the money they spent and the increase in tuition they put on the student. You can barely fit your own students much less house any one else….

I congratulate you guys on finally making it in to some ranking (even though it was just the AP) but you’ll never own USF. USF’s team is back to being a young team again. By the time you guys make it to the big east we’ll be right back to where we were 3 years ago., 4-0 USF.

What has a greater chance of happening actually UCF beating USF or 200 student from UCF finding a way to cheat the game and pay the refs off. I think the later.

Do some research, UCF was actually on the top of the list of Florida Schools for Big East consideration when Miami headed to the ACC, more students & more sports facilities than USF. Conferences are super political entities and UCF was passed over for some reason we’ll never hear about, but I know shortly after UCF got rid of long time AD Steve Sepraw…. Simply put UCF got screwed and USF went from 0-Hero in no time once joining the Big East. As far as a rivalry, once UCF is finally offered a spot in an equal conference as USF (Big East, ACC, C-USA w/BCS Bid) the talent will immediately equal out making the rivalry more than just 2 close proximity FL schools. They recruit the same kids and are in the same area but if you where a kid would you rather go to Disney World (BCS Conference) or Busch Gardens (Mid Major).

Ok, so lets say I was a USF Bull and not a UCF Knight, which is incorrect, what would I have to be scared of, exactly?

USF has shellacked us four times in a row, including a brutal beat down the year we had out proudest weapon in Kevin Smith.

  • @Derp says:

Sounds like you’re a USF bull scared of us beating you…

  • Derp says:

I’m sure this will go just like the last time this rivalry was attempted: Losses for UCF all around.

Look, we tried this before. We wanted it to be an awesome War on I4. We want UCF to be UF, I know.

But it’s not happening. The Knights have been out-recruited by USF, they got into a better conference than we are (Anyone who thinks we are getting picked for the Big East is trapped in a time machine from 2002), they have a fresh new coach (Who, while at ECU, beat us consistently) unlike what we have with George O’Leary, a coach who has not shown the ability to adapt beyond basic coaching levels and only shines when we get an oft-missing star player with existing talent.

They’ve had their time in the ranking, they’re beating other teams within Florida (FSU last year), and they’ve attracted the national spotlight.

UCF has done none of those things (Except for Plancher). And we get nothing for losing to USF year after year except national embarrassment.

Instead of trying to go after USF again and again, why don’t the Knights try a rivalry with another school on par with our talent level like FIU or FAU?

I know you gomers and bros will froth at the mouth when reading this, but Jesus Christ, let’s be a little realistic.

  • Rivarly says:

Absolutely….it creates a great atmosphere and gives the fans an extra home game each year…….this equates to a heated game, the players are pumped, TV, sell out crowds and bragging rights….

  • usf says:

USF sucks… when UCF gets into the big east we will dominate them real fast

  • Too Bad says:

too bad you can’t go to USF for a game, you have to go to DT Tampa

  • F-USF says:

as long as it’s at UCF. no one wants to go to that dump of a school for a football game.
