This past Sunday night was the start to award season 2011 with the Golden Globes. Hosted by Ricky Gervais, people in 150 countries watched as some of Hollywood’s elite won some very prestigious honors.
Starting two hours before the awards aired live on NBC, E! hosted live from the red carpet. Guiliana Rancic and Ryan Seacrest interviewed everyone from the pregnant Natalie Portman to newcomer Emma Stone. Seacrest got a little touchy-feely with celebs like Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal. It was also the first red carpet in which him and girlfriend Julianne Hough stepped out in public as a couple.
One of the sweetest moments on the night was when “Big Bang Theory” actress Kaley Cuoco presented costar Jim Parsons with best actor in a television series. The love these two have for each other was so exciting to see. Cuoco told Seacrest that she was engaged after he commented on the gorgeous and huge diamond ring she was wearing. She later confirmed that it was to the designer and not to her boyfriend.
The Fashion Police, Golden Globes edition aired Monday night and it was hilarious what Joan Rivers had to say about some of today’s biggest stars. Nominees for Best Dressed included Angelia Jolie, Mila Kunis, Natalie Portman, and Anne Hathaway. Nominees for Worst Dressed went to Leighton Meister, Helena Bonham Carter, Heidi Klum, and Michelle Williams. The judge’s choice for best and worst dressed went to Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams respectively.
There is much debate about Ricky Gervais’ hosting. Prior to the show starting, he told Seacrest “ I think I’ll go close enough to the edge but not go over it.” The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is standing behind their choice in hosts stating, “When you hire Ricky Gervais, one expects in your face, sometimes outrageous, material. We would never condone some of his personal remarks, but this was one of the best shows we’ve ever had, we were pleased.”
Many celebs are outraged, and some even spoke up while the show was going on. While Robert Downey Jr. was up at the microphone to present an award, he took a shot back at the infamous host, saying Gervais is “hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones.” Here are some of the most talked about quotes from Gervais, courtesy of eonline.com:
“It’s gonna be a night of partying and heavy drinking, or as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast.”
“And I’d like to quash this ridiculous rumor going around that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes.”
“Also not nominated: I Love You, Philip Morris. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. Sort of the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then…My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke.”
