After seven season with the UCF football program, George Godsey is moving on.

The UCF running backs coach has accepted a job to join the staff of the New England Patriots in the NFL, the school announced Thursday afternoon.

“George has been with me for a long time as a player and coach,” UCF coach George O’Leary said in a statement released by the school. “This is happy news to see him get this opportunity to expand his coaching career with a great organization like the New England Patriots. I wish him good luck there.”

Godsey served as both the running backs coach since the 2008 season. Prior to that he served as UCF’s quarterbacks coach from 2005-08. Godsey arrived at UCF in 2004, taking a job as the offensive graduate assistant coach to work under O’Leary.

Godsey is a graduate of Georgia Tech, where he spent time as a quarterback under O’Leary. There, he set the record for career completion percentage (63.3) and ranked second in career pass-efficiency rating (143.64). He also had a nose for the endzone, ranking third all-time at Georgia Tech with 41 career touchdown passes.

Following his time as a Yellow Jacket, Godsey played one season in the Arena Football League with the Tampa Bay Storm. He led the team to an Arena Bowl title in 2003.
