An already eventful offseason for the UCF football team became even more noteworthy with the announcement Sunday that Knights star cornerback Josh Robinson will forgo his senior season and enter the NFL Draft.
“I’ve been in discussions with the Robinson family over the holidays, and after I met with them Saturday regarding the pros and cons of entering the draft as well as staying in school, the family decided that he wanted to declare for the draft,” UCF head coach George O’Leary said in a press release from UCFAthletics.com.
“I wish him well in his future endeavors in the NFL and I hope everything works out for Josh and his family.”
Robinson will be a tough player to replace after three standout seasons with the Knights.
The 5’10”, 200-pound corner was named to the 2009 All-C-USA Second Team his freshman year, and a member of the All-C-USA First Team the past two seasons.
Robinson was the anchor of a UCF defense that led Conference-USA in points allowed and yards allowed the past two years, and total passing yards allowed per game this past year, as well as being nationally ranked in most defensive categories the last three years.
He guided a dominant defense in 2010 that won the Conference-USA Championship and went on to limit Georgia to six points in the Knights Liberty Bowl victory.
Robinson was tied for the team high in interceptions this season with two, and he returned an interception for a touchdown in the season opener against Charleston Southern. He also recorded 48 tackles (34 solo), and 15 passes broken up.
In addition to being a great pass defender, Robinson was often used on special teams, where he excelled in a punt/kick returner role.
Overall, Robinson ranks fifth in school history with 10 interceptions.
The Knights will miss him on defense next year, but should still be one of the better defensive teams in the nation next season with plenty of talent returning and solid recruits on the defensive side of the ball.
