On Monday, February 20, 2012 at 8:30 pm, the Florida State University Student
Supreme Court will be meeting to decide the fate of the 2012 Spring Election and the
future of Student Government at Florida State University.
The Student Supreme Court is scheduled to hear appeals and determine the fate
of the Ignite Party, the student political party that was disqualified by the FSU
Elections Commission a week prior for not disclosing their financial and campaign
contribution statements. They were also accused of using SGA resources and
student resources to support their political campaign.
Such an act is illegal and is a major violation.
Progress Coalition was able to search public record and come across receipts from
the business Fast Signs showing that current FSU SGA senator and Ignite party
campaign manager, Itai Raz, used Florida State University Student Government
Association’s tax exempt status, which isn’t available to student political parties and
is only available to FSU SGA.
Using such exemption constitutes a major offense.
As well, Progress Coalition investigators were able to uncover that the name on last
year’s receipt from Fast Signs, which also shows use of the tax exempt status, was
Avi Assidon, the current FSU SGA Student Body President and founder of the Ignite
party. These acts are illegal and are violations of the Code of Ethics, and as such are
an impeachable offense.
The Court is also scheduled to hear an appeal from the Ignite party on a decision
made by the Elections Commission to disqualify them from the election, although
they still have yet to turn in a complete expense statement.
