The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced that Storm Johnson has signed for the NFL team and will be competing in the Fall as part of a competition to advance on the roster in Tampa.
The former University of Central Florida running back ran for 1139 yards and 14 touchdowns the 2014 season, when UCF football took home the conference championship for its second year in a row.
During his time as a running back for UCF, Storm Johnson also earned first-team all-conference honors.
Johnson will compete for a backup position on the pro-team this fall after facing a tough cut from the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. The alumnus began his NFL career as a 7th round pick, playing with the Jaguars alongside fellow alumnus Blake Bortles as quarterback.
As a Jaguar, Johnson logged 86 yards and 2 touchdowns through the season.
According to the Buccaneers, an extra voluntary mini-camp for veterans has been granted because of the addition of a new head coach in 2016. Head coach Dirk Koetter, an offensive coordinator for the Jaguars from ’07-’11, will evaluate the current Tampa Bay roster before the NFL draft on Thursday evening.
