Shawn Moffitt was selected as a Lou Groza Star for his kicking performance against ECU this weekend.
In the 40-20 victory over the Pirates, Moffitt was responsible for 16 points.
In addition to going 4-4 on extra points, Moffitt also booted a perfect 4-4 in field goal attempts. Moffitt’s two field goals of 22 and 23 yards in the first half broke a 14-14 tie and then extended the lead to 20-14 before going in at half. Moffitt then opened the second half with a 36-yard field goal to keep the scoring alive but his best was yet to come.
To cap off the scoring for the Knights, Moffitt drove a 49-yard field goal through the uprights to bring the Knights to an even 40 on the evening. The kick was the longest of his career to dot the I’s and cross the T’s on a career night for the sophomore.
Moffitt is also 7-7 on the year in field goals.
The honor not only gives him national recognition for the week, but also helps his case and puts him on the radar for the end of the year voting for the Lou Groza Award.
The Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award is given annually to the nation’s top kicker as determined by a panel of Division- 1 head coaches, sports writers, sportscasters, professional kickers and previous winners. The award is determined by assembling a list of the top-20 kickers towards the end of November based on performances throughout the season.
Starting in early September, each week the Lou Groza Award committee selects three ‘Stars’ who demonstrated tremendous skill and achievement in their weekend match-up. The player’s week by week recognition by the committee is added to their resume for those vying for the position of Top Kicker at the end of the year.
You can vote for your favorite star of the week here, http://www.lougrozaaward.com/12SOTW6 . Moffitt currently has a comfortable lead but lets make sure it stays that way to help him win the Lou Groza at the end of the year.
