Before becoming what is now known as the University of Central Florida, the institution was established in 1963 under Gov. Farris Bryant to serve as Florida’s space industry.

On June 10, 1963, Bryant signed Senate Bill No. 125, creating Florida Technological University. The school was founded to provide higher education in engineering, science and technology to support the nearby Space Coast and operations at Kennedy Space Center. What began as a university with a small enrollment has since grown to be the 2nd largest public university in America.

In 1978, the university was renamed the University of Central Florida under founding President Charles Millican. The institution expanded its academic offerings, opening its doors to students pursuing a wide range of fields.

According to official UCF data, the university has an enrollment of 70,674 students making it the largest university by enrollment in Florida.

UCF offers more than 100 bachelor’s degree programs, along with several majors and minors, allowing students to choose their desired academic path. Students can attend classes at multiple campuses across Orlando, including the main campus in east Orlando, UCF Downtown and the Rosen College of Hospitality Management.

Over the years, UCF has made a significant impact in Central Florida through its growth, innovation, and academic opportunities, making it a substantial institution for students to invest in their future. From long study sessions to the energy of being info the bright lights of Saturday night football games, and the peaceful outdoor seating areas throughout the campus, the university offers a wide range of student experiences.

As UCF continues to grow, the institution remains committed to expanding opportunities for students and supporting their academic and professional success. May UCF continue to reign as a university that gives the opportunity for students to be involved in organizations and excel in their academic performance as it reaches 63 years of becoming an institution of excellence.
