UCF has banned Phi Gamma Delta fraternity from participating in Spring rush activities as UCF investigates allegations of hazing and antisemitism tied to a disturbing photo from a spring 2023 ritual. As a result of this, they have also been placed on temporary suspension by their national headquarters, UCF confirmed to Knight News.

Knight News received an anonymous tip, including the image you see above, saying “I have come into possession of this picture of hazing and antisemitism from the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta. This picture is appalling and I thought the matter should be looked into. Especially in light of recent political events and I am worried about that wellbeing of those involved.”

After asking for more information on how this picture was acquired, the source said they got it from someone else’s phone, believing it to be of two blindfolded pledges, leaving out their names for safety purposes.

To further investigate this, we asked UCF for a comment on this picture for clarification on this situation. They told Knight News that this picture originated in Spring of 2023, but it came to their attention over the course of the past semester, when some pictures were placed around UCF’s Office of Fraternity Sorority Life.

We received this comment via email from UCF:

“We are appalled to have recently received an image that was taken in Spring 2023 as part of a hazing ritual that took place at an off-campus location. UCF unequivocally condemns hazing and acts of antisemitism. While we have come to understand that the students in the photo were blindfolded and unaware of the hateful symbols at the time, this does not diminish the seriousness of this incident or the harm caused.

“The image was anonymously left in front of the Fraternity and Sorority Life building. Student Conduct and Academic Integrity immediately began a review, working first to identify the organization and individuals involved. The organization was later identified as Phi Gamma Delta and then placed on interim action. We will continue to pursue this matter following the policies and processes as outlined in the Golden Rule Student Handbook.

“UCF remains committed to upholding the values of integrity, respect, and compassion that define our community. This incident will not deter us from our mission to provide a welcoming, safe campus environment for every student. The university will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that acts of hazing have no place at UCF.”

When reaching out to the local and national chapters of Phi Gamma Delta, we received this response from the president of the chapter, Jordan Denitto:

“This incident was terrible and we would never condone it. The current chapter members were not aware of this occurrence, and the members responsible are no longer at the University. We continue to cooperate with the University in its investigation.”

When Knight News checked today, the website reports “Interim Suspension.” Knight News will check with UCF to see what the change means. To view their status, click on this link from UCF’s OFSL to view the status of all Greek Life organizations of UCF.
