Thousands of people applied to one of the nation’s newest medical schools and with the selection of only a small percentage, UCF’s College of Medicine has its first full class of incoming students.

According to the Orlando Business Journal, UCF’s College of Medicine will welcome 120 students to the Lake Nona campus this fall, making it the first full class for the new medical school.

The accomplishment also helps UCF move towards a goal of a full 480 students in all four classes.

“We’re really seeing the thing start to mature,” UCF President John Hitt told the Orlando Business Journal. “Even though we’re not offering full scholarships like we did for the charter class, we’re still able to attract very well-qualified applicants. We had about 4,000 people applying for 120 seats.”

36 physicians graduated from the college’s first class in May and now, Hitt tells the Business Journal that he hopes a new accredited residency program at the Orlando VA Medical Center, expected to start next summer, will help Central Florida attract and retain top students who graduate from the medical program but end up leaving Central Florida because of no local residencies.
