The Obama White House has classified the incident as an “attempted terrorist attack.” Obama, who is vacationing in Hawaii, is reportedly staying updated and has discussed it with security officials.

The suspect is reportedly a Nigerian named Abdul Mudallad. The suspect tried to detonate an explosive device that was a mixture of powder and liquid, but it somehow failed, according to a senior U.S. intelligence official who talked to the AP on the condition of anonymity.
