Important UCF Update About Status of Pegasus Landing Buildings
May 7, 2010
As you know, issues have been raised recently regarding the condition of the buildings at Pegasus Landing. I am writing to update you about our most recent information and decisions.
It is important to me that you know that the health and well being of students is always our top priority. From the beginning, we have acted quickly and aggressively in requesting that the Pegasus Landing building owners:
* Produce a comprehensive plan that appropriately addresses all inspection and repair issues.
* Relocate students from apartments because of mold/water intrusion.
* Conduct additional air quality tests.
* Communicate regularly and openly about the building issues.
Because UCF does not own the Pegasus Landing buildings, the university can only request that action be taken by the owner, Capital Project Finance Authority 2000f (CAPFA).
CAPFA recently requested a medical opinion regarding the potential health impact from conditions in the Pegasus Landing buildings. This week, UCF received that opinion, which was given by a medical professional.
As requested by UCF, CAPFA shared this information with all residents on May 6. For your information, we are providing you a copy of the medical opinion: http://umark.ucf.edu/clients/news/BrooksReport.pdf
I urge you to read the opinion and determine what it means for you.
Landing Assistance Network
Since being made aware of these issues, UCF has repeatedly requested CAPFA produce a comprehensive plan that appropriately addresses all inspection and repair issues with the Pegasus Landing buildings. To this point, the university has not received that plan.
As a result, on May 6 the university suspended its agreement with CAPFA.
The suspension does not free students from their leases, as UCF has no authority to modify current leases at Pegasus Landing. However, UCF has created a “Landing Assistance Network” that will provide resources, guidance and references to help you evaluate your options.
Students can contact the Landing Assistance Network at 407.823.4663 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday or at www.housing.ucf.edu.
UCF’s suspension of its agreement with CAPFA means several things:
* We will relocate our on-site Residence Life staff from Pegasus Landing, but will continue to provide 24-hour Residence Life services, including duty hours for RAs and RHAPs. For more information, contact Residence Life staff members by calling UCF Housing and Residence Life or visiting the Housing Administration Building.
* UCF will suspend referring students to live in Pegasus Landing.
* UCF police will continue to patrol Pegasus Landing, security guards will remain in place and shuttle service to campus will continue.
We hope to have an on-site Pegasus Landing service center available soon. In the coming days, a list of resources available to students will be posted to our Housing and Residence Life Web site at www.housing.ucf.edu. We will continue to update our Web site as new information and options become available.
We are very disappointed that we have been forced to take these actions. But we strongly believe they are necessary and support our goal of ensuring the continued health and well being of Pegasus Landing residents.
