UCF Kappa Sigma Charter Revoked

News, UCF Greek Life — By on May 11, 2010 at 12:30 pm

UPDATE 5/11/2010 7:00 PM: We just received an official statement from the Kappa Sigma Executive Director, Mitchell Wilson, stating a “violation of sanctions previously placed against the Chapter” as the reason for the revocation of the UCF charter. To view the full statement, click here.

KnightNews.com has received several unconfirmed texts and emails stating that Kappa Sigma’s charter at UCF was revoked.

We have been working all morning on finding out if our tips were accurate, and if so, why Kappa Sig’s UCF charter was pulled.

KnightNews.com e-mailed a UCF spokesman at 7:22 a.m. this morning to try and confirm the tips. We got an e-mail back from UCF spokesman Chad Binette at 12:14 p.m. confirming the tips were true.

“The Kappa Sigma national office informed UCF on May 11 that it was revoking the fraternity’s charter. This decision was made by the national office and not through any university action.

“UCF values the scholarship, service and enthusiasm our Greek community brings to the university. We will work with the national office about how this decision affects students and the fraternity,” Binette wrote.

After getting the tips, KnightNews.com felt comfortable breaking the news after noticing several Facebook statuses of Kappa Sigma members, alumni and friends suggesting their charter is gone.

“R.I.P. – Kappa Sigma Lambda Epsilon…it was only a matter of time,” read one status of a Kappa Sigma brother.

The Facebook posts has other alumni, friends and brothers discussing the decision — which to some was a surprise but to Kappa Sigma insiders seemed like was a forgone conclusion.

“Nationals pulled the charter. It was a culmination of the last few years,” another brother wrote.

“My guess is it was a business decision. We were only as valuable to them as the dues they actually collected. They revoked the charter so they could play again another day,” posted another.

UCF Kappa Sigma alumnus Kevin Stone, known for selling Greek jerseys at Greek Unique on campus also joined the conversation on Facebook.

“The “plan” is for a 3 year hiatus,” he posted.

“Still terrible news,” another responded. “What happens to the property/ house?”

KnightNews.com has covered positive contributions Kappa Sig made to UCF around Christmas

“No word yet on that,” Stone replied. “From the email I got the aim is to rent it for the 3 years….”

A leader in the UCF Greek community who’s not a member of Kappa Sigma but has knowledge of the situation, and asked not to be identified, told KnightNews.com the situation is very sad and placed the blame squarely on the fraternity’s national office.

“A lot of them, especially the current president, was trying to make chapter better,” he said. “Nationals was not helping and kept fining them.”

I thought they only kicked off cool frats? Sucks to suck.

UCF is just as guilty… they weakened kappa sig with BS for years…. suspending them for pillow fights while letting NPHC groups punch people in the chest and die right after, steam room haze and brutally beat them with canes.

UCF basically kicked Kappa Sig in the back and threw them to the floor… then their nationals drove the bus right over them to finish them off. Thanks UCF!

    @Alumni and @Holocaust:

UCF didn’t make the decision, their nationals did. Did either of you even read the article, you are idiots. IFC and UCF are even sending a letter to their nationals on Kappa Sig’s side to negotiate their suspension.

UCF is not trying to rid UCF of fraternity life, that’s why their are still 43 Greek Organizations on campus. If these fraternities didn’t break the rules, then they wouldn’t get in trouble. If they disagreed with the rules, they should attempt to change them before they break it.

did webster cook steal another wafer?

  • Alumni says:

Of course this had everything to do with the Glen Beck parking scam. UCF was being threatened with a lawsuit. No one verified that Kappa Sigma was cleared of all wrong doing. No one has investigated yet but when you have 53 people all saying that they parked their cars in a place that had signage for event parking, they would have won the lawsuit hands down. UCF made the right decision. The “3 year” break is a joke…come on…their chapter has been REVOKED!!!

  • @holocaust says:

this is greek life, not Schindler’s List. chill out.

  • greek park holocaust says:

First, they came for the pikes and I didn’t speak up, for I was not a pike.

Then, they came for SAE — and I said nothing, for I was not an SAE.

Then they came for SigEp, and I stood silently, for I was not a SigEp.

Then they came for the Betas… and I did nothing, for I was not a Beta.

Now they’ve come for Kappa Sigma… will we stand up? If we don’t… well, then next, they’ll come for me. And who will be left to stand up for me?

Good, another worthless bunch douches off of ucf!

  • Ksig supporter says:

For anyone who knows the men of Lambda Epsilon, they know these guys busted their butts doing everything nationals wanted, including suspending brothers and paying outrageous dues, in order to fulfill what Kappa Sigma nationals wanted. After several hefty fines and nationals constantly on them for anything and everything, this comes as no surprise to some. The Lambda Epsilon chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity will always be brothers and don’t need a house or a piece of paper to tell them who they are. These are fine young men and I am proud to say that these boys are some of my best friends. This had nothing to do with UCF, Glen Beck, or anything else besides the National Headquarters of the fraternity. Their president and exec are handling this the best they can and hopefully will get an appeal in the works by the end of the week.

    Long Live Lambda Epsilon!

  • reply to glen beck fan says:

No, nationals had cleared the chapter of the Glen Beck parking incident after an investigation and it was clear the fraternity was not at fault, but UCF and the people who chose to park in a tow away zone. the parking incident had nothing to do with this.

  • observer says:

national upset at kappa sig giving them a bad rep? perhaps the glenn beck parking fiasco played a role?

  • @ well says:

Yeah, because whining made their suspension go from 2 years to 1 year? UCF and their lawyer helped reduce their suspension, not whining. Get your facts strait before you write something down.

  • well says:

They could always just do what Beta did and whine until they get their way.

  • insider says:

Kappa sig was struggling financially after some strict fines by Kappa Sigma nationals, and were trying to recover, but unfortunately were never given the opportunity. They’ve been on and off suspension/probation for the last 3 years. there is still opportunity to appeal, but it seems that the fraternity has started to give up hope in kappa sigma nationals. They were the largest Kappa Sigma chapter in Florida, which makes this news even more surprising. This article was written very nicely. Hopefully these boys can appeal this and with the help of UCF, it shouldn’t be to hard to get their charter reinstated. They are a solid group of men, but just were never given the chance.
