Gas prices in Orlando and around the nation continue to plunge as holiday travel picks up this year, having fallen for over 80 straight days.

According to the AAA, the national gas average for a gallon of gas is $2.39, down over 40 cents from just over a month ago. People pumping their gas at UCF-area gas stations such as Wawa and RaceTrac are seeing even better prices, both stations are selling gas at $2.35.

Consumers have been taking advantage of the low prices, the AAA projects 98.6 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home this holiday season, a four percent increase from last year. The AAA says this will be the highest travel volume they have ever recorded during the holiday season, dating back to 2001.

“While the economy continues to improve at an uneven pace, it seems more Americans are looking forward with increasing consumer confidence, rather than looking back at the recession. This is helping to drive expected travel volumes to the highest level we have seen for the year-end holidays,” said Marshall L. Doney, AAA President and Chief Operating Officer in a release.

States such as Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas are rapidly approaching going under $2.00 state average for a gallon of gas. Florida sits close to the middle on average state gas price.
