SEE THE LATEST INFORMATION ON HOW UCF IS REMEMBERING ANN HEFFERIN
After asking UCF Spokesman Grant Heston about the information we received from multiple sources, he released this statement:
A University of Central Florida student died today after being found unresponsive in her on-campus residence.
Ann Marie Hefferin, an 18-year-old freshman from Maitland, was found by roommates in their Lake Claire residence. At about 4 a.m. 911 was called, CPR was performed and emergency units responded immediately. The student was transported to Florida Hospital East at about 4:30 a.m.
UCF Police are investigating the death and do not believe there is a threat to the campus community. A cause of death has not been determined and more information will be released as it is available.
“We lost a member of the university family today,” said UCF spokesperson Grant J. Heston. “This is a tragedy and we offer our assistance and most sincere sympathies to her family and friends.”
UCF counselors have been made available to the students at Lake Claire and are available to anyone who needs assistance. UCF Counseling Services will be at the Lake Claire Community Center all day today and can also be reached at http://counseling.sdes.ucf.edu/ or by calling 407.823.2811. Counseling services are free for UCF students.

Sigma Chi seems to be related to many incidents at SEVERAL other universities.
if you didn’t know her, then you have no reason to place judgement. she wasn’t a partier so please keep your opinions to yourself. she was a perfect girl who is now a perfect angel. RIP annie, please stop this arguing and PLEASE PRAY FOR HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS in this hard time. thank you.
I just love how ppl keep saying that the tri delts are the ones who are suffering. If anything keep the family and friends of this poor girl in your prayers, not a sorority who may or may not have really known her. As many have stated, results were inconclusive, so one can’t definitely say what happened. Also, this could happen anywhere where underage people go to parties whether it be accidental or purposefully done. A family and the Ucf community has lost a person so young and regardless of how it happened or who is at fault, she won’t come back. Family and friends are in my prayers.
I’d bet it is some weird alcohol + prescription drug mix. Maybe she’s never really drank before. She drinks a little bit, feels fine. Drinks a little more, stops breathing.
Just my insensitive guess for the day. Hope Tridelt and Sigma Chi don’t get screwed unless they had something to do with it. Condolences to the family and her close friends.
Remember not to mix drugs when you don’t know what it will do.
Rush Sigma Chi!
It is absurd to think that alcohol is solely a greek problem. It is a college problem. It is a young adult problem. I have seen people get dangerously drunk in basically every situation you can imagine – High school parties, college bars, frat parties, gdi parties, tailgates, at the beach, and clubs downtown. We do not know the truth about what happened and we cannot blame and point fingers until we know. We also can’t think that what happened couldn’t happen elsewhere. Whatever the cause of this horrible tragedy, the assumptions have shed light on a serious problem at ucf and I hope ucf makes alcohol education a priority. People need to know when to stop drinking, stop a friend from drinking, and to call 911 if a friend has had too much. This is such a terrible thing to happen to someone just starting her life. My thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, sisters, roommates and anyone who knew her.
How could you question the Tri Delta sisterhood if you’re clearly not in it. This title is extremely misleading so therefore you automatically assume that Ann died from drinking too much at a frat party. Do you know how long Ann stayed at that party, or if she even had much to drink there? Do you know when she left and if she possibly did something after her sisters took her home? Were you there to see her sisters with her and watching every sip she took? Have you personally seen the records stating that Ann died from alcohol or drugs? If you weren’t there then you CANNOT come to any conclusion and you cannot belittle the Tri Delta’s sisterhood saying that it was their fault. The fact is, a Tri Delta died from an unknown cause and it absolutely heartbreaking.
Tri Delta’s are going through a tragic loss right now and I can tell you that their sisterhood will grow from this and will transform that chapter to something greater than it was before. My heart goes out to the Hefferin family and Tri Delta and I pray that you find strength from this incident.
Guys it way too dam early to point fingers. Man, no one should be pointing fingers. A great girl died. Lets remember her, not start fighting over it. She’d probably be pissed if this is what people were talking about. There are good and bad people BOTH INSIDE AND OUT OF GREEK LIFE. I’m a geed, but right now I feel for what her sisters are going through. So lay off about it.
“Now while I have not personally been involved in Greek Life, I have had friends involved and I know the sort of drinking they make new brothers/sisters participate in.”
Seriously? You aren’t Greek. So you don’t know. Shut up. It’s like saying, “I have black friends, so I know…” and then making some foolish assumption that makes you seem like an ass.
So far the only thing they’ve concluded was that her autopsy results were inconclusive. If she were obliterated from drinking too much or had drugs in her system I have a feeling the autopsy results would’ve been easy to figure.
Let her family and the sorority grieve before we jump to conclusions about what happened, especially if you don’t even know what happened because you WEREN’T THERE. God bless and her and her family will be in my prayers.
excuse me everyone, if you didn’t know her please keep your opinions to yourself. she was a good friend of mine i met in high school and it is extremely offending that you are stereotyping her a a typical sorority girl who partied all the time and got herself killed. Ann was a beautiful person inside and out, and no one knows what definitely happened to her so please stop speculating. instead of writing negative comments and trying to blame someone for this tragic accident, please pray and keep in your thoughts her parents, brothers, and friends. thanks.
Also do misconstrue what I had to say. I do not think that Ann Hefferin was some sort of alcoholic or drug user. From what I have read she seemed like a great person and I am truly sad that this happened. And if it turns out that the death has nothing to do with alcohol or drugs, Then I am sorry that I implied any negative about the Tri Delt sisterhood, but I do not take back what I said about a call for true brother/sisterhood.
This is extremely tragic. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, sisters, and other friends throughout the campus.
Shame on you who are using this event as an attempt to crucify the Greek system, Sigma Chi, or her sisters. Your mind and comments should be filled with caring thoughts for her family and friends.
Now while there is no cause of death yet, there also hasn’t been prior medical conditions brought up yet. Therefore unless she had a random brain aneurysm odds are that it was either drugs or alcohol. Now while I have not personally been involved in Greek Life, I have had friends involved and I know the sort of drinking they make new brothers/sisters participate in. And I think the people at fault IF the cause of death turn out to be Alcohol or Drugs are the Tri Delt sisters. Maybe not all of them, but if your are taking new sisters to their first “Frat Party” then you need to look after them and make sure they are safe and not in any sort of danger. After all isn’t that what sisterhood is all about? So I do not think Tri Delt is going through “enough” right now. I think the people we should feel sorry for are her parents and family that sent her to college only to find out that she passed away the first week. Now while this may be cynical I think that the Tri Delts are more concerned about making sure this does not backfire on them, and cause problems for their chapter. She was a freshman and thus MOST of the sisters of Tri Delt could not have known her longer than a week. The point of all this, is a call to all the fraternities and sororities in UCF and everywhere else if you are going to consider yourselves part of a Brotherhood/Sisterhood make sure you keep your end of the bargain and look out for your fellow brothers/sisters and NEVER ever abandon them when they are not in a right state. A true brother/sister would not have left their brother/sister alone in their apartment in the state that she must have been in IF this was a Alcohol or drug related death.
In stead of pointing fingers why not ban together as a student body/campus and support each other. Nothing is written anywhere that says she died from drinking. I personally know several people who are active in Greek life that do not drink or do drugs. It’s a shame that a girls memory and reputation can so quickly be trashed by some careless words of others who have nothing to go on but assumptions. May Ann rest in peace, may she not have died in vain, may she know that her sisters of Tridelta loved her even in such a short time frame and may her family find peace and comfort through this horrific time. Please for the sake of the family and friends of Ann don’t sensationalize her death based on assumptions but mourn the life of a beautiful young girl who was taken to young!
Maybe drinking was pushed in your chapter “to fit in”, but it certainly wasn’t in mine. Please don’t generalize.
You need to stop thinking Ann death was alcohol or drug related. I saw her last night before Midnight and she was not drunk! so STOP the gossip and just pray for her family and leave tridelta and greek life alone!
let’s be real,
that’s not specific to Greeks, it’s just College in general and that first taste of freedom, not someone being forced to do anything…and you are doing a lot of assuming. I would wait for the facts to come out, otherwise pointing fingers at one Chapter or an entire system is irresponsible. May She Rest in Peace. Been a rough 2011 for UCF
I am an active Greek member and I was never peerpressured into drinking, it’s your own choice. Someone has passes away from our Greek community and your shitty comments aren’t necessary . The truth will come out and it will put this to rest. My thoughts and prayers go to all the ladies in tri delta and her family. This is a very tragic time so if you have nothing nice to say don’t say it all!
Let’s not argue about right and wrong and send our prayers to her friends and family.
The results of the autopsy were inconclusive. IF it had been alcohol, drug or poison related that would have been relatively easy to see. Please quit jumping to conclusions just because she attended a party or was in a sorority. Don’t bring scandal into this poor sweet girls life. I would also request that you change the title of the article until the facts are in. None of the REAL news reporting sources framed the incident like knightnews has.
As a former UCF greek member and current UCF student, I have seen what happens and what is encouraged as a new member. YES, drinking is pushed upon new students to try and fit in. This is a form of hazing and should be taken seriously.
The worst part about it, let alone Ann’s death, is that the truth will be kept a secret as to not jeopardize either Sigma Chi or Tri Delta… which means no justice for Ann.
Hopefully EVERYONE who was involved in her drinking gets a reality check and realizes that drinking is not everything it is cracked up to be.
My love and prayers to Ann’s family and friends.
The title is 100% true, do you all just think it was a pure coincidence that she went to a fraternity party and died later that night? I guess it was. It seems totally plausible that she just happened to go to a frat party and just happened to die of natural causes right after? Righttt.
My guess is that she drank wayyyy too much and/or was poisoned by someone in Sigma Chi.
Of course this is a tragedy, I hope there was no foul play, but let’s be realistic here.
I bet those swarms of bees did this.
I agree with “terrible”. Shame on the media!
Our thoughts, love and prayers are with her, her family and her sisters at Tridelt.
This should not be about pan love, greek love, ucf love or any of that right now. Losing a child should never happen. The thoughts and prayers should be going to those that knew her the best and loved her the most. The cause will be found out later and for those that are worried about how they or the greek system are portrayed, you should learn that there are things that are far more important than your world. A life was lost, a child was lost, a friend was lost. My prayers go to her family.
Prayers are out to the sisters of Tri Delt as well as her family!
Our prayers go out to her family
thats a terribly misleading title, leave it to knightnews to be the first to post rumors and the last to give a damn about what really happened. im sure her family would be extremely upset to see their daughter portrayed this way. you should be ashamed of yourself
Tridelt is going through enough right now. You have now idea what how they feel. You need to leave them alone. We are here for you girls.
<3 Pan Love
What a terribly misleading headline — we don’t know the cause of death yet.
